A woman needs to feel safe walking to the market or working her farm without fear.
Right here in Tiriki East, Vihiga.
We recently brought together 50 determined women to take control of their futures using a practical approach called the GALS methodology. it was about planning for real-life results.

Through our visioning sessions, these women identified exactly what is standing in their way. They realized that for a family to be successful and have enough food,
Pesa inatumika aje na wapi? We need to know exactly how money meant for farming and development is being spent.

When our leaders are transparent and our neighborhoods are safe, everyone wins. We are linking Governance (how things are run) directly to the Right to Food. If a woman can’t track agricultural funds or move freely to sell her produce, her hard work can only go so far.
By demanding a seat at the table, the women of Tiriki East are making sure that empowerment isn’t just a word,
it’s a reality that puts food on the table for the whole community.

Fifty voices, one vision. Today in Sabatia Sub-County, we aren't just starting a training; we are igniting a movement. Fifty women have come together to redefine their futures through the GALS (Gender Action Learning System. ) methodology, turning shared challenges into collective power

Through dialogue, collective learning, and shared experiences, the women will identify key challenges, propose practical solutions, and strengthen their voices in governance and accountability processes. Together, we are building a strong movement of informed, empowered women driving change from the grassroots.

In a system where women and youth are consistently underrepresented in formal governance, the moment the Deputy Majority Whip was formally recognized was more than just a gesture, it was a disruption of the status quo. There are moments in this work that stop you in your tracks, and today, we witnessed one of them. For the first time, she was given the floor to speak on her own terms, carrying the weight of a leader who is too often ignored in committee divisions and high-level meetings.

It was a unique, bittersweet pleasure to witness. While we celebrated the moment, it served as a heavy reflection of a reality where positions are often earned but influence is withheld. Seeing a woman in senior leadership finally receive the recognition her office demands shouldn’t be a "unique pleasure", it should be the standard. This why our work in Gender Transformative Approaches in Agrifood Systems continues to be key.

Deputy Majority Whip.

Key Challenges Identified:
• Resource Inequality: Women and youth still face significant barriers to accessing land, credit, and extension services.
• The "Time Poverty" Gap: Women dominate production in the poultry (76%) and dairy (85%) sectors but are often excluded from high-value marketing and pricing decisions.
• Leadership Representation: Despite high group membership, women and youth are still sidelined in formal leadership and governance structures.
• Safety & Mobility: High prevalence of GBV and lack of inclusive market infrastructure (like childcare and PWD accessibility) hinder economic participation.

📢 Our Asks to Kiambu Leadership:
1.Gender-Responsive Budgeting: Allocate at least 30% of the agriculture budget to targeted interventions for women, youth, and PWDs.
2.Inclusive Governance: Formalize women-led groups into cooperatives and ensure marginalized communities have secure land tenure and legal identity.
3.Safe Market Systems: Invest in rural roads and markets equipped with childcare, sanitation, and safety measures.
4.Stronger Accountability: Passing county laws to strengthen Grievance Redress Mechanisms (GRMs).
A more equitable agri-food system isn't just about food security, it’s about justice and economic growth for all of Kiambu.

Kiambu has robust frameworks like the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), a significant "policy-implementation gap" remains.

Our dialogue focused on transforming these plans into funded, inclusive actions that benefit everyonecespecially women, youth, and marginalized groups.

Today, we hosted a High-Level Policy Dialogue with Kiambu County Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to address critical gaps in our local food systems. Alongside our partners at Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and Scaling Up Nutrition (SUNCSA), we presented findings from the Gender-Transformative Approaches (GTA) project.

Tonight on KTN News, the big question: is Kenya’s economic growth a real turnaround or just a polished narrative?

Our Head of Programs, Alexander Riithi, goes live to break it down, beyond the headlines, into what the numbers are actually saying and what that means for households, jobs, and everyday survival.

At The Institute for Social Accountability, we stay grounded where it matters most, people. We keep pushing for clarity, accountability, and honesty in how public resources are raised, spent, and experienced in real life.

📺 Catch it live on KTN. Don’t miss this one.

Sustainable development doesn’t happen by chance, it’s built through governance that listens, includes, and responds with evidence.

Last week, the TISA team took a meaningful step in that direction during a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the Kiambu County Assembly. It was more than a formal engagement, it was a moment to reflect on what intentional, people-driven governance looks like when communities are meaningfully included in decision-making.

We came with a clear, forward-looking vision from our project, “Advancing Gender Transformative Agrifood Systems and Nutrition Governance in Kiambu,” which has been ongoing since September 2024. The focus remains on strengthening food systems that are responsive, inclusive, and grounded in real community needs. In Kiambu we are working with a dynamic group of farmers giving them tools from household level, to farm and finally translating to increase income and quality of life.

This Labour Day, take a moment to be proud of the work you do.

Not just the big wins, but the quiet choices. Choosing honesty when it’s easier not to. Doing your job right even when no one is watching. Speaking up when something feels off.

That’s where social accountability lives. Not just in policies or offices, but in everyday decisions at work.
Because the truth is, the values we practice at our workplaces shape the kind of country we live in.
So today, celebrate your work. And make a simple commitment to keep showing up with integrity, fairness, and courage.

Happy Labour Day ✊🏾

Gender Transformative Approaches in Agrifood Systems is not theory on paper, it is what real change looks like inside households, where decisions about time, labour, and money begin to shift.

In one farming household, the Gender Action Learning System visioning journey became a moment of reflection and change. The farmer began to see clearly how much of his wife’s day was consumed by unpaid care work, especially washing clothes and fetching water. He realised this was not just routine household work, but time and energy taken away from rest, farming, and other productive opportunities.

That reflection led to a major decision. He sold a bull a significant asset and symbol of wealth in the household, in order to buy a washing machine. It was a real sacrifice, but one made intentionally to reduce the burden of unpaid care work and shift how time is valued in the home. He also supported the construction of a new well to address water scarcity, easing one of their most constant daily struggles.

Through these actions, the Balance Tree approach becomes real: when unpaid care work is reduced, time is freed, and that time is redirected into farming, income-generating activities, and improved wellbeing for the entire household.

What stands out most is the mindset shift. This was not just about “allowing” change, it was about actively prioritising it. He reallocated household resources, even giving up a productive asset, to invest in dignity, time, and shared progress.

This is what Gender Transformative Approaches in Agrifood Systems look like at household level: difficult choices, real sacrifice, and gradual reshaping of how labour and resources are shared, creating more balanced and productive farming livelihoods from the ground up.
