We have partnered with Airtel Kenya to improve access to inclusive education for over 2,000 learners across Baringo, Wajir and Garissa through the ‘Build Brighter Futures’ initiative.

Together, we will expand access to quality learning opportunities for children with visual and hearing impairments across targeted schools by addressing critical gaps in learning infrastructure, water and sanitation services, and access to digital learning resources.

This collaboration will help create more inclusive, supportive learning environments and improve education outcomes for children in underserved communities.

Approximately 1,300 learners and over 3,000 community members at Unyaa in Kitui, now have access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water — thanks to a solarized water borehole, water kiosk, and child-friendly handwashing stations at Unyaa Primary School.

The solar-powered borehole replaces the school's reliance on costly diesel-powered water systems, lowering water expenses for both the school and surrounding households while ensuring learners have consistent access to water for sanitation and daily use.

The project, which was commissioned yesterday, was implemented by Community Development Programme (ECDP), with support from ChildFund Kenya and Britam, as part of the ongoing Solar-Powered Water Resilience Program for Community and School WASH Systems.

As we marked in Makueni, we celebrated a major milestone: over 500,000 high-value trees planted since October 2025! 🌱

Together with our partners, we’ve mobilized communities across Kajiado, Makueni, and Kiambu to plant trees in public spaces and learning institutions through the Re-greening Africa Project, supported by Dow.

This achievement reflects our commitment to restoring degraded landscapes in schools and public spaces while strengthening community resilience. For children, these trees mean healthier environments to learn and grow in, greater awareness of environmental stewardship, and a more sustainable future.

With a target of one million trees by June 2027, we continue to scale up our efforts—supported by a digital tree-tracking system that helps ensure every tree planted not only grows, but contributes to lasting environmental impact.

Yesterday, we commissioned and handed over to the community, a solarized water borehole and water kiosk at Ilng’arooj, alongside child-friendly handwashing stations constructed at Ilng’arooj Boys Senior School.

The borehole restores access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water for approximately 600 learners across five schools, while also benefiting more than 5,000 residents in six surrounding villages. For the learners, this means improved health and hygiene, reduced risk of waterborne diseases, and better attendance and participation in school, while creating a safer and more conducive learning environment.

The project was implemented in partnership with Britam Foundation and Ewangan Child Development Program, as part of ChildFund Kenya’s broader commitment to advancing access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for all in Kenya.

On this 2026, the message is clear: the Earth is sending urgent signals, and our response must match the scale of the challenge. The call to act has never been more important.

In Kenya, communities continue to face the consequences of increasingly frequent droughts and floods, disrupted livelihoods, growing food insecurity, and rising competition over scarce natural resources. For children, these challenges are especially profound, shaping not only their present well-being but the environments they will grow up in and depend on.

At ChildFund Kenya, we are working with communities to strengthen resilience through sustainable disaster risk reduction and practical environmental restoration actions, such as rehabilitating degraded lands in schools and public spaces, alongside climate adaptation efforts, while also supporting peacebuilding where environmental pressures fuel conflict—because a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment is fundamental to every child’s ability to thrive.

One of the ways we are turning commitment into action is through the Re-greening Africa Project supported by Dow, where we are conducting large-scale tree planting campaigns in Kajiado, Makueni, and Kiambu counties. Since October 2025, we have supported communities to plant over 500,000 trees, a significant step toward our goal of planting one million trees by June 2027. We are also using a digital tree-tracking application to monitor tree planting and survival rates, helping ensure that restoration efforts translate into lasting environmental impact.

Smallholder farmers in Nyeri and Laikipia counties are transitioning from subsistence and traditional dairy practices into climate-smart dairy enterprises through the Lishe Bora na Mama Silage Project.

Funded by Dow and implemented by Pioneer Child Development Programme Official-PCDP in partnership with ChildFund Kenya, the project is driving remarkable results. Among more than 400 farmers, average milk yields have increased from 5 liters to 16 liters per cow per day, raising total daily production from 775 liters to 2,480 liters among the farmers, particularly during the dry season through the use of silage bags.

Beyond increased milk production, the project is helping create better futures for children. Improved household incomes and food security mean children have access to better nutrition, improved health, and greater opportunities to stay in school and thrive.

Last week, we broke ground on the rehabilitation of two critical boreholes and the construction of child‑friendly handwashing stations at Unyaa Primary School in Kitui County and Syamama in Machakos County.

Once revived, the boreholes will restore access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water for approximately 1,700 learners at Unyaa and Syanthi primary schools, in Kitui and Machakos counties, respectively, while also benefiting about 600 households in the surrounding communities.

The boreholes rehabilitation and hygiene improvement project is jointly led by ChildFund and the Britam Foundation, in collaboration with the Eastern Community Development Programme (ECDP), and relevant county authorities.

The project is part of our broader commitment to advancing access to safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) for all in Kenya.

The Regreening for Resilience Program, in partnership with the County Government of Makueni, , and local community organisations, led a transformative initiative at the newly inaugurated Makueni County Child Rescue Centre in Mulala. This collaborative effort brought together diverse stakeholders, including children and community leaders, to create lasting and impact.

While the Centre awaits official gazetting to begin hosting children, it is already envisioned as both a haven for children and youth and a beacon of environmentally smart innovation in the region.

During the event, Eng. Sebastian Kyoni from the Maukueni County Department of Gender, Children, Youth, Sports, and Social Services highlighted the shared commitment to making the Centre a model of sustainability and excellence.

With generous support from Dow, the Regreening for Resilience initiative provided the centre with essential resources, including watering cans and tree seedlings. We are also investing in the development of an on-site tree nursery, which will serve as both an income-generating activity and an educational opportunity for the children, ensuring long-term project sustainability and community engagement.
