Promoting sustainable agricultural development in Africa! AAAE was established in 2004 in Nairobi during its Inaugural Symposium.

The African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE) is a not-for-profit organization and a continent wide network of Agricultural economists working in agriculture and broadly related fields of applied economics on issues related to improving the productivity of African agriculture. The association has over 600 registered active members working in agricultural and resource economics as well as in other social sciences around the world.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗔𝗔𝗘 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗗𝗿. Guy Blaise NKAMLEU

Dr. Nkamleu is 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁 at the African Development Bank Group, with a career spanning agricultural research, economic evaluation, country strategy and development finance.

He built his research career at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), serving as Senior Economist for Impact Assessment, 𝗬𝗮𝗺 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁 and 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿. His work spanned Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria and the wider West and Central African cocoa belt.

His research has examined the 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮, including productivity, technical efficiency and technology absorption, alongside farmers’ technology and pest management choices, credit access in cocoa production, and child labour and schooling in cocoa-growing households.

His study of productivity growth, technical progress and efficiency change in African agriculture, published in the African Development Review in 2004, remains among his most cited works.

At the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Nkamleu has served as Principal Post Evaluation Officer, Chief Country Economist and Senior Advisor to the Vice-President, bringing an agricultural economist’s evidence base to country strategy, evaluation and development finance.

He is also a long-standing contributor to AAAE, having presented research at the Association’s 2007 conference in Accra and published in the early volumes of 𝗔𝗳𝗝𝗔𝗥𝗘.

His Fellowship recognises his long engagement with the Association’s scholarly community, pioneering evidence on African agricultural productivity, and a career bridging agricultural research and development finance on the continent.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗔𝗔𝗘 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. Jonathan Nzuma

Prof. Nzuma is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nairobi, and Chief Editor of the African Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AfJARE), AAAE's flagship journal.

His work focuses on agricultural policy, international trade and commodity markets. His doctoral research at the University of Guelph examined the effects of trade liberalisation on Kenya's maize sector. Since then, his research has explored food price transmission and volatility, technology adoption among smallholders, impact evaluation, food and nutrition security, social networks and women's empowerment in agriculture.

A First Class Honours graduate of the University of Nairobi, Prof. Nzuma joined the University's faculty in 2002. He teaches agricultural policy, trade, microeconomics and production economics, and has supervised more than 5 doctoral and 25 master's students.

Beyond academia, he has contributed policy research and technical expertise through institutions including the The World Bank Group, FAO, World Food Programme,International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and KIPPRA Kenya.

As Chief Editor of AfJARE, he provides editorial leadership to a leading platform for African agricultural economics scholarship.
This Fellowship recognises his editorial and departmental leadership, contribution to AAAE, and sustained record of policy-relevant research and training in Kenya and beyond.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗔𝗔𝗘 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗗𝗿. Dirk Troskie

Dr. Troskie brings a rare combination of a farmer's instincts, an academic's rigour and a senior public servant's experience.

He began his career as a farmer before becoming a lecturer at Kromme Rhee Agricultural College. He later joined the W𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, rising to Director of Business Planning and Strategy at Elsenburg, where he has led the department's long-range futures planning for the agricultural sector.

His scholarly contributions include developing a social accounting matrix for Western Cape agriculture, published in 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗸𝗼𝗻 in 1997, and, with Prof. Vink, a study of the political economy of agricultural policy across South Africa's nine provinces, published in 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗸𝗼𝗻 in 1999.

By 2017, his record included 47 scientific presentations, 34 peer-reviewed papers, 89 substantial reports and more than 900 popular articles covering subjects from macroeconomic policy to farm-level issues.

Beyond his research and public service, Dr. Troskie has contributed extensively to AAAE, serving two terms on the 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 from 2013–2016 and 2016–2019, alongside service on numerous scientific committees.

This Fellowship honours his long and practical service to AAAE and his distinguished record of translating agricultural economics into public policy and strategy.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗔𝗔𝗘 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. Johan Swinnen

Prof. Swinnen is Director General of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Managing Director of CGIAR's Systems Transformation Science Group. He is also a co-convener of the 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗘 / 𝗜𝗙𝗣𝗥𝗜-𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 in Nairobi.

He is internationally recognised for his work on the political economy of agricultural and food policy, institutional reform, trade and global value chains in developing and transition economies.

Before leading IFPRI, he spent 15 years at KU Leuven, directing the 𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗢𝗦 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, while also serving as Senior Research Fellow at the @𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀.

His international experience includes serving as 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁 at the World Bank and Economic Adviser at the European Commission, as well as visiting professorships at Stanford University. He has advised organisations including the 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸, 𝗘𝗕𝗥𝗗, 𝗢𝗘𝗖𝗗 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗔𝗢, and serves as a 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. He has also co-chaired T20 task forces on food security and climate.

Most recently, he co-edited the 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 with Christopher Barrett — a 24-chapter review of five decades of food policy that received the AAEA's 2026 Quality of Communication Award.

His Fellowship recognises his institutional leadership, his contribution to AAAE through the 8th ACAE / IFPRI-Africa Conference, and a body of work that has helped shape food policy thinking on the continent.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗔𝗔𝗘 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗤𝗮𝗶𝗺

Prof. Qaim is a leading scholar in food systems and development economics, one of the most influential food systems and development
economists of his generation. His research addresses sustainable food systems, agricultural development, and the reduction of poverty, hunger and malnutrition, with extensive fieldwork across Africa, Asia and Latin America.He is also President of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE).

Following postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley (2001–2003), he held chairs at the University of Hohenheim (2004–2007) and the University of Göttingen (2007–2021), before joining the Zentrum für Entwicklungsforschung / Center for Development Research (ZEF)) at the The University of Bonn as Director in 2021.

He has authored more than 250 academic publications, including work in 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗣𝗡𝗔𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀, and was named a Highly Cited Researcher in 2021. He has advised the Global Panel on and Food Systems for Nutrition, FAO, CIMMYT, the European Commission,𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆, and the 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Beyond his scholarly contributions, Prof. Qaim has supervised a large cohort of African doctoral researchers through his research groups in Göttingen and Bonn, many of whom are now active members of AAAE.

His nomination recognises his global scholarly leadership, his longstanding commitment to training African economists, and his contribution to the partnership between AAAE and IAAE, which he currently leads.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗔𝗔𝗘 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. Rose Nyikal

Prof. Nyikal is Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nairobi and Secretary-Treasurer of African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE). She earned her BSc, MSc and PhD at the University and has spent her entire academic career there, giving her a deep and distinctive understanding of Kenyan agricultural economics.

A production economist, her research examines how smallholder farmers use resources and access finance. Her work spans agricultural credit and microfinance, loan repayment, the impact of mobile money on farming households, household decisions around farm income, and consumer acceptance of biofortified foods.

She teaches Operations Research, Production Economics and Farm Management, and has supervised numerous PhD and MSc students who now contribute to agricultural institutions across East Africa.

From 2019 to 2021, she served as Principal of the 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗖𝗔𝗩𝗦), the college that hosts the AAAE Secretariat. She has also provided expertise to 𝗔𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗗, 𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗔, Kenya's State Department of Agriculture and 𝗥𝗲𝗦𝗔𝗞𝗦𝗦.

With the 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗘 taking place in Nairobi, this Fellowship is a fitting recognition of her decades of teaching, mentorship and institutional leadership in agricultural economics.

Dr. Babu is Senior Research Fellow and Head of Learning and Capacity Strengthening at International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)the , and an Extraordinary Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Pretoria.

His connection to Africa spans more than three decades. From 1989 to 1994, he lived in Malawi, serving as Senior Food Policy Adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture, where he helped design a national food and nutrition information system. He also worked as an Evaluation Economist for UNICEF-Malawi and as Senior Lecturer at the University of Malawi, where he helped launch postgraduate programmes.

Since joining IFPRI in 1992, he has devoted his career to strengthening the people and institutions behind effective food policy. He has led capacity-strengthening initiatives across Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and South Africa, and coordinated AGROCURI, a 40-partner consortium of CGIAR centres, universities and international organisations.

He has authored or edited more than 14 books and 60 peer-reviewed articles, including the 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. He is Editor-in-Chief of the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 and a Pravasi Fellow of India's National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

This Fellowship recognises a career-long commitment to strengthening African policy research capacity — a contribution that sits at the heart of AAAE's mission.

Announcing AAAE Fellow 2026: Prof. OPEYEMI AYINDE

Prof. Ayinde is Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria and a Research and Innovation Associate with the Chair on Innovation Studies at Official_Tshwane University of Technology Technology. She currently serves as Vice-President of African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE).

Her research asks questions that matter on every farm. How do farmers respond to risk, especially climate risk? What makes new technologies spread, or stall? How do food prices behave, and how does gender shape farming in West Africa?

At Ilorin she served as postgraduate coordinator and Head of Department, and she became a full Professor in 2019. Internationally, she was a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar at The Ohio State University. She has consulted for AfricaRice, IITA and the West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme, sits on the board of AfricaLICS, and has edited journals including AGROSEARCH and AJSTID.

Perhaps her greatest legacy is people. She has supervised 8 doctoral students, 30 master's students and more than 100 undergraduate projects across Nigeria, South Africa and Rwanda.

This Fellowship honours her service to AAAE at Executive level, her mentorship of the next generation, and her visible leadership as a woman in the discipline.

At the just-concluded 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 (𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗘), held jointly with IFPRI Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, we proudly celebrated and honoured eight distinguished members of the agricultural economics community.

This prestigious Fellowship recognises exceptional scholarship, leadership and service, and celebrates those whose contributions continue to shape agricultural economics and advance the profession across Africa and beyond.

Their careers span academia, international research, public policy and development finance. Collectively, they have trained generations of agricultural economists, provided editorial leadership to the discipline's journals, and produced research that has informed agricultural and food policy across the continent and beyond.

🏆 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗟𝗟 | 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

Africa's cities are growing faster than anywhere on earth. The question is whether they're feeding people better.

Joshua Kafotokoza, Hannah Ameye & Matin Qaim set out to answer it. They linked ten years of Malawian household data to satellite maps and traced how urban growth reshapes what ends up on the family plate. Here's what they found:

🔹 Urbanisation brings both healthy and unhealthy foods to the table.
🔹 It works through three channels: incomes, farms, and local markets.
🔹 The real nutrition gains show up only where local markets are well developed.

The takeaway for policymakers: urban growth alone won't fix diets, but strong markets can. This research gives us a sharper lens on the true nutrition dividend of Africa's rapid urbanisation.
