Powering Tomorrow Together

One of the greatest strengths of the Zimbabwe Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI) is the diversity of voices it brings into the same conversation. Community representatives share their lived experiences alongside policymakers, mining-sector actors, faith leaders, civil society, traditional leaders and technical experts; creating an important space to listen, challenge assumptions and explore solutions together.

The Norwegian Church Aid Advocacy Programme Africa (NAPA) was pleased to join partners and stakeholders at ZAMI from 14th – 18th September to listen, learn and contribute to these conversations. In collaboration with our valued partners Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development Zimcodd (ZIMCODD), Zimbabwe Council of Churches, and Zimbabwe Environmental Law Organisation (ZELO) we remain committed to supporting locally led, community-focused approaches that strengthen community agency, amplify local voices and create opportunities for meaningful engagement with those who influence decisions across the mining and natural resources sector.

The ZAMI programme also extended beyond the conference room. A mine visit provided an opportunity to engage with the mining context first-hand, complementing the discussions at ZAMI with practical exposure to the sector and the communities and stakeholders connected to it. This connection between dialogue and lived realities is important in grounding advocacy in experience and evidence.

We celebrate our partners whose sustained advocacy made many of these conversations possible, and the stakeholders who continue to make ZAMI an important platform for dialogue. The task ahead is to translate these conversations into continued collaboration and practical progress that strengthens community participation, responsible environmental stewardship, access to remedy, inclusive opportunities and approaches that create lasting value for generations to come.

Africa Can't Wait Campaign Launched.

Only about 23% of the climate finance Africa needs each year to deliver its 2030 climate commitments is currently being met. Africa has contributed little to the climate crisis yet faces a major financing gap to respond to it.

Norwegian Church Aid is attending the launch of the campaign, happening now in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where faith leaders, faith-based organizations, civil society and climate actors have come together to launch Africa Can't Wait: Interfaith Voices for Just Climate Action.

Through this campaign, we are joining our voices to call for just and rights-centred implementation across four key areas: climate finance; adaptation, resilience and loss and damage; renewable energy and clean cooking; and restoration and nature-based solutions. We reaffirm our commitment to locally led climate action and the leadership of faith actors as key links between communities and decision makers.

Africa Can’t Wait is a campaign calling for climate action that is fair, reaches the communities that need it most, and protects people and their future.

This week in Addis Ababa, we are participating in the Fourteenth Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-XIV ), taking place from 7–9 September 2026 at UNECA.

Convened under the theme “From Pledges to Implementation: The Belem–Antalya–Addis Roadmap,” CCDA-XIV provides an important platform for African policymakers, civil society, development partners, researchers, youth, women, local communities and other stakeholders to strengthen Africa’s climate leadership ahead of and .

For Norwegian Church Aid, participation in CCDA-XIV is an opportunity to amplify the voices and priorities of communities most affected by climate change and contribute to discussions on climate justice, adaptation, climate finance, resilience and inclusive implementation.

As Africa moves from commitments to delivery, the focus must be on ensuring that climate action translates into tangible improvements in the lives and livelihoods of people and communities on the frontlines of climate change.

The conference also provides an important space to strengthen partnerships and build momentum towards an ambitious, inclusive and COP32 in Ethiopia in 2027. Africa needs more than pledges. Africa needs implementation, accountability, equity and climate finance that reaches those who need it most.

The Alternative Mining Indaba is seeking to appoint an AMI Coordinator for a 6–8 month contract, based in Johannesburg.

The successful candidate will support the coordination of the AMI, including stakeholder engagement, secretariat support, fundraising, implementation of the strategic plan, civil society mobilisation and strengthening the AMI network.

This week, Maria Clara Osula - Head of Programmes for the NCA Advocacy Programme for Africa, will be joining the Global Advocacy Meeting, “Answering the Call of the Child: From Commitments to Action,” as a panel speaker. The meeting will take place in Nairobi from 1 to 2 September 2026 and is convened by and the for Safer Communities

Maria will contribute to the plenary discussion on "Global Reality: The State of Children today". She will share insights from NCA’s peacebuilding and advocacy work, including its support for community led approaches across Africa.

The meeting will bring together faith actors, civil society, governments and development partners to explore practical ways of strengthening the protection and wellbeing of children affected by conflict, displacement and humanitarian crises.
