Some of our favourite people have been hard at work. 🙌
Our Marine Scouts have had a packed programme lately, from beach cleans to mangrove species identification, learning about blue careers, and much more. At Local Ocean Conservation, inspiring the next generation of ocean champions is at the heart of everything we do.
Keep going, team. The ocean is lucky to have you. 🐢💙

This World Oceans Day, we opened our doors to the next wave of ocean champions. Young people from our community explored the marine centre, learned about blue careers, and shared their dreams with us, and what dreams they were. Scuba divers, beach cleaners, turtle protectors. Every single one of them a reason to keep doing what we do. At LOC, we believe that conservation begins with connection, and today we witnessed exactly that. Welcome to the ocean family.

Happy World Ocean Day from all of us at LOC! 🌊
If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes of sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation, today is the perfect day to come and find out. Our centre is open and we’d love to show you around.
Whether you’re local or just visiting the coast, come and connect with the ocean, and the work we’re doing to protect it.

Our beach monitors are out every night during nesting season. When a nest hatches, they’re there to see it. And the morning after, our team returns to carry out an excavation.

We carefully dig down to assess what happened: how many eggs hatched successfully, how many didn’t, and why. It’s painstaking work, but the data matters. Every excavation helps us understand hatching success rates, identify threats, and build a clearer picture of how our turtle population is doing over time.

And sometimes, just when you think the nest is done, you find a little surprise at the bottom.

Here one tiny straggler was still waiting. Disorientated, exhausted, but alive.
Our team carefully helped it to the surface and watched it make its way down the beach and into the ocean.

The creek called, and the community answered. Our latest Mida Creek clean-up was everything we love about conservation done right: sunshine, dancing, and bags upon bags of plastic pulled from the water’s edge. When protecting this coastline feels this good, that’s community conservation at its best. 🌊✨
