Nest excavation

Three days after the last hatchling made their way to the sea, our team carefully excavated this nest, a standard part of our monitoring process. It gives any late starters time to dig themselves out naturally, while still letting us record what happened inside the chamber.

Tucked in the sand, we found these two still working their way up. Both were healthy and strong, and made it into the ocean.

Every excavation tells us something: how many eggs hatched successfully, what challenges the nest faced, and how we can keep improving protection for future clutches. It’s slow, careful work, but each hatchling that makes it to the water is worth it. 🌊

No two shells matching, no pattern the same,
Each one carries a story, a shell for a name.

Proof that the plainest of creatures can wear
A masterpiece stitched out of tide and repair.

Our Field Officer Deborah was out doing a routine beach survey when she saw just how much plastic was piling up on the shoreline. So she did what any of our team would do: she organised a clean up.

The plan was ambitious, a full stretch from Blue Bay to Turtle Bay, with our Marine Scouts and the team from A Rocha Kenya joining in.

The reality? Every single collection bag was full before they’d even covered 4 meters. 😳

Four. Meters.

It’s a stark reminder of just how much plastic ends up on our beaches, and how much of it never makes it any further than the sand it washes up on. It’s also a reminder of why surveys like Deborah’s matter so much. You can’t fix what you don’t measure, and you can’t ignore a problem once you’ve seen it up close.

Huge thanks to Deborah for spotting it and taking action, to our Marine Scouts for showing up ready to work, and to A Rocha Kenya for partnering with us on the day. This is exactly the kind of collaboration that keeps Watamu’s beaches, and the turtles who nest on them, a little safer.

We’ll be back for the rest of that stretch. Blue Bay to Turtle Bay, we’re coming for you. 💪🐢

We can still get there! 🐢🌊

We’re at 26% of our 25,000 Rescues goal, but here’s the thing, every donation right now gets matched, so your impact doubles instantly thanks to Bush and Beyond and Africa Born.

This campaign isn’t just a number. It’s our 24 hour rescue hotline. It’s Fikiri and the bycatch team out on the road with local fishers. It’s our monitors on the beach all night keeping watch. It’s hatchlings making it to the sea instead of never getting the chance.

We’ve come so far already, and with your help we can close this out strong.

Tap the link in bio to give what you can. Every bit counts, and right now every bit counts twice. 💙

Let’s get Watamu’s turtles home.
