ASSETS, is an acronym for Arabuko-Sokoke Schools and Eco Tourism Scheme. Through the provision of secondary school scholarships, we meets the economic and social needs of the local community, whilst promoting the conservation of two of Africa's most important ecosystems. Company Overview

ects, offers a creative solution to respond to the needs of local school children, whilst encouraging community support for the protection of the largest remaining area of East African coastal forest at Arabuko-Sokoke, and the associated tidal inlet of Mida Creek. General Information
Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Mida Creek support some of Africa's rarest wildlife. As the wildlife fights for survival, so do the people living around the forest and creek. ASSETS is a pioneering community conservation project which bridges this gap by promoting child education and alleviating poverty, whilst encouraging community involvement in nature conservation. ASSETS distributes funding from Eco-tourism to provide bursaries (scholarships) for secondary school children who would otherwise be unable to afford the school fees. We encourage the local people to value the forest and creek by equally distributing the benefits from eco-tourism throughout the local communities. In addition ASSETS beneficiaries are involved various conservation activities.

TRANSFORMATION is the most amazing and treasured gift we have seen this year. The time we get to spend with the community and have worthwhile conversation on conservation on the threatened habitats and creation care has been a huge blessing. We appreciate the consistency and commitment that the village members living around the Arabuko Sokoke Forest have shown over time. We are so privileged to have partnered with them and we also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our supporters, donors and partners Kenya Community Development Foundation KCDF and I&M Foundationwho have stood with us to ensure that the community is made aware of the importance of environmental education and sensitized on sustainable ways of living.

During the monitoring and evaluation session with the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) and I&M Foundation we visited Mida community where we met Viola Kache Karrisa a student at Mida Primary school and an active member of the wildlife Club. From the conversation with Viola, her passion and motivation behind her commitment to plant various trees is derived from her love for the environment and the beauty of seeing that the space around her is all green.
So far, she has managed to plant a total of 300 trees with the different species majorly Casuarina commonly known as Australian pine and Afzelia Quanzensis( pod Mahogany) commonly known as BambaKofi among many other species. She extends her gratitude to her own grandfather who deliberately gave her the chance and permission to plant her tree seedlings on the farm.
Goes without saying that truly the efforts put in place by KCDF and I&M Foundation have had greatest impacts in the students lives and above all uplifting their desires for environmental conservation. Viola says that she has great plans for her small farm, and she would love to set up her own tree nursery to not only plant the trees on her own farm but also donate a number of seedlings to her fellow agemates, friends and neighbors for she would love to share her experience and see to it that her entire village is beautifully green.
As A Rocha Kenya we are also grateful to be part of this lifechanging project and thankful for the opportunity we got to see the true transformation in the community in the hearts of people involved for matters conservation. The dedication and commitment displayed by the team players is an indication that indeed conservation in community and sustainable development in communities is possible with joint hands and unity of thought and focus.We hope that Viola will eventually set up her own Nursery and successfully diffuse this noble venture in her community.

Environmental education is a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment. As a result, individuals develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions.
The components of environmental education are: Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental challenges, Knowledge and understanding of the environment and environmental challenges Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain environmental quality Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenge and Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental challenges.
Our team throughout this year our was dedicated to ensure that the community was reached out to and made conversant with the trends and what is expected of us in terms of taking of our environment is concerned.

Tree planting is the process of transplanting tree seedlings, generally for forestry, land reclamation or landscaping purposes. ASSETS program not only aims at supporting children and students through the Eco bursaries but also play a huge role in the care of creation. We are happy to always engage the young generation and our beneficiaries in such activities, which pulls efforts to protect biodiversity.

Sustainable development is development that meets needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We are honored to share that at A Rocha as we desire to share ideas and sustainable ways of living to the community, we have the interest of what exactly could be the need. We appreciate our supporter’s ad donors who through their generous giving we have been able to execute different projects over the years. This fireless cooker is one of the projects that have duly transformed how women preserve their meals and save on energy while cooking. This reduces the amount of charcoal or the number of firewood that one would use to prepare various meals. Community involvement is meaningful, consistent participation in activities that support and improve upon social being. Installation process of these energy saving jikos have always been an adventure of learning processes with the community members involved. The laughter we share and the collaboration of hands pulled together to make stones, mud and the whole installation process a success is one wonderful scene to find yourself at. Among the gifts we unwrap this year would include the smiles and happiness that these men and women have shown at every jiko delivered to their homesteads. We appreciate their commitment to restore and protect the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and also adopting the norm of tree planting and creation care at their homes.
We appreciate every support towards ASSETS and we are grateful for every work that has been put in over the years and this year as well. It has been impactful.

WHEN I GROW UP…According to Meriam-Webster, vision is defined as the act of power of imagination. When you apply the vision to your future, you can create a mental picture that can be used to direct your actions. Vision serves as a guide and can be used to provide a sense of purpose. Our ASSETs beneficiaries were confident enough to boldly share their visions of who and what kind of occupations they would set their minds on when they excel in their education. We are so honored to be part of this amazing dreams that such young souls are into and it is our prayer that through your continued support these will not just be dreams but they will be actualized in due time. LASTWEEK was a wrap at Mijomboni where we had our final meeting with the Muvera wa ASSETs members. This marked the last meeting out of the five meetings that we have been having over the week at different regions around the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, the aim of the meeting was to create awareness on the protection and conservation of the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest which is a natural habitat for the various endangered species in the world.
We appreciate the commitment from the Muvera wa ASSETs members for their endless support and it is our prayer that together we can work together to protect this forest.

Kahingoni Primary School is where we met the two clusters of MUVERA from Nyari and Kahingoni. Mzee Christopher Mupo , the Chairman of MUVERA wa ASSETS was in attendance. The highlight from the meeting included ,action plan for MUVERA members focusing on the conservation of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest this would involve creating awareness to the rest of the community members on the need protect and conserve the forest.

This week we are having meetings with MUVERA wa ASSETS on environmental education and conservation. Yesterday our team members were at Bogamachuko primary school. We had the opportunity to discuss and get to clearly explain the many reasons why the community ought to protect the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest which is a natural habitat for different rare species like the Golden-rumped elephant shrew.
The rate of deforestation has increased over time following the data provided by the Friends of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest we urged the community to open heartedly venture into other sustainable ways of living. We deeply appreciate the support and the collaboration from the community members who have sacrificed their precious time to be available for the meetings.
