BahariHai

BahariHai based in Watamu, Kenya. We protect and help create healthy marine ecosystems. On top of that we pride ourselves in being community based.

What makes our organisation special is that we all have many years of experience in the conservation field. Even though Bahari Hai was founded in 2021, many of our staff have over a decade of experience each, with some more than two decades. That means we not only understand the biological (‘technical’) part of conservation work, but also the (‘social economical’) human side of conservation. Cruci

al to modern conservation, we believe. Sustainable solutions to environmental problems must include the human side. That means working with communities. And through communities. We understand local communities like none else. Because we are part of them! Our mission is to be a Community Based Organisation (CBO) that secures the existence of endangered species and creates a thriving natural marine environment for all. Although we are still rather small, we do have ambitious plans to scale up working solutions nationwide, and to develop new ones that respond to a rapidly evolving world.

A year of Sea turtle conservation.

Here's a highlight of 2025

> Sea turtle in-water monitoring (Photo-id)
The Photo-id team identified 73 new individual sea turtles and recorded them in the database.

> Nest conservation
21 sea turtle conservationists underwent training with our team.
Throughout the year, we recorded 40 new nests laid within and outside the Marine Protected Area.

> Sea turtle rescues
Swift action of the community patrol and Bahari Hai team led to interventions against trapped and poaching attempts in Watamu. This led to the rescue of 4 sea turtles.

> International Sea Turtle Society Symposium (ISTS) 2025
The symposium took place in Ghana and 2 members of our team participated in the event, gaining skills and sharing their knowledge.

Nature’s New Year surprise!

An Olive Ridley turtle has completed nesting in Watamu. The turtle was carefully monitored by our nesting team throughout the egg-laying process and safely returned to the sea afterward.

A beautiful reminder of nature beginning the year with hope and renewal.

A total of 137 eggs have been successfully relocated.
