𝗔 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗼, 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀? 🌱

With funding from INCiTiS-FOOD, MAZIDO International, Taita Taveta University (TTU), and Three o'clock (3OC) came together to explore this possibility through Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming.

We started by learning how to breed and rear BSF, established a production hub in Voi, trained farmers, and began processing the larvae into ingredients for animal feed. Today, we are testing BSFL-based fish feed formulations.

It has been a journey of learning, making mistakes, adjusting, and trying again.

Yesterday, we sat together for our project close-out meeting, reflecting on how far we have come and what still lies ahead as the INCiTiS-FOOD-funded phase comes to an end.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀.

Our hub in Voi remains operational, fish feed trials are ongoing, and we are still working with farmers.

One group particularly close to this journey is Every Drop is Life, based in Mwaranginyi, Voi. We are supporting them to grow a reliable BSF breeding colony, with the hope that they can eventually produce animal feed on a larger scale using a formulation that has been tested and validated.

There is something encouraging about seeing community members take an interest in a technology that can turn organic waste into protein for animal feed and nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.

We are grateful to INCiTiS-FOOD, CECM in charge of Water, Sanitation, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources Mwandawiro Samboja,MSc,PMP®, our consortium partners, and the farmers who have walked this journey with us.

The project funding may be ending, but there is still so much we want to achieve together. 💚

𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧’𝐭.
Most of us don't really think about rabies until there is a bite.

We live very closely with animals. Our dogs are part of our homes, children play with them, and for many families, donkeys are part of everyday work and livelihoods. Yet we rarely think about the risk when these animals are not vaccinated.

One thing about rabies that really stands out is how long it can remain unnoticed. **Exposure can be forgotten long before the disease appears. Symptoms usually develop within months, but in rare cases, incubation can last for years.**

And once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal.

That makes something as simple as vaccination incredibly important.

During our recent vaccination exercise, The Taita Taveta County Government, in partnership with MAZIDO and with funding from The Brooke East Africa, reached dogs, cats, and donkeys with rabies vaccination.

Sometimes protecting a community starts with something very simple, making sure the animals living closest to us are protected too.

From the smallest household companion to the animals that support our livelihoods, every animal deserves someone who knows how to care for it.
And sometimes, taking better care of them starts with us going back to class! 😄
Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshop brought together animal health professionals from across Taita Taveta County for a day of learning, exchanging experiences, asking questions, and sharing a laugh or two.
Because animal health is never a one-size-fits-all affair. Every animal presents different challenges, and every experience from the field brings something valuable to the table.
Beyond the presentations and discussions, what stood out was the shared commitment to doing better for the animals and communities we serve. Whether it's preventing disease, recognising signs of illness early, or improving everyday animal care, the knowledge gained here has a purpose far beyond the workshop room.
And yes, the CPD points were earned too! 😉 But the real reward is taking that knowledge back to the animals and communities that depend on us.
To everyone who participated, thank you for bringing your experience, curiosity, and energy. The learning continues where it matters most — out in our communities. 💚

Our dogs greet us like we've been away for years. Our cats keep us company, and our donkeys work alongside us, helping families earn a living every day.

But how often do we think about protecting them from rabies?

One bite can change everything. Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, yet preventable through vaccination.

This World Rabies Day, let's show our animals the same care and love they give us.

The County Government of Taita Taveta, in collaboration with Brooke East Africa and MAZIDO, will host the Taita Taveta County CPD Conference from 24th–26th September 2026 in Voi under the theme “Stronger Together.”

The conference will bring together veterinary professionals to strengthen animal health, zoonosis control, animal welfare and sustainable livestock livelihoods.

The conference will culminate in a free animal health clinic and rabies vaccination exercise for donkeys, dogs and cats in Kaloleni Ward, Voi, on 26th September 2026.

On 28th September 2026, the County will join the world in marking World Rabies Day in Kishushe, Taita Sub-County, with awareness activities and free rabies vaccination for donkeys, dogs and cats in Kishushe and Paranga.

Sometimes, the best stories begin with a setback.

This week, we spent time with the Boloi Self-Help Group in Msorongo, Mwatate Sub County, Taita Taveta County. The group came together with one goal: to improve the welfare of their donkeys.

They received training on pasture establishment, hay harvesting, and fodder storage. They also planted pasture, hoping to produce enough feed for the dry season. Unfortunately, the rains were delayed, and most of the pasture did not germinate.

But they did not give up.

With the knowledge they had gained and a fodder bank supported through the project with funding from The Brooke East Africa, they turned to the naturally growing grass around them. They harvested it, baled it and stored it for the months ahead.

Anyone who knows Msorongo understands how harsh the dry season can be. When the grass disappears, livestock struggle. Every bale stored today is a step towards protecting donkeys, cattle, goats and other livestock when feed becomes scarce.

What started as an effort to improve donkey welfare is now helping entire households become more prepared for the dry season. Healthy donkeys continue supporting families with transport and farm work, while the stored hay gives other livestock a better chance during difficult months.

We are grateful to The Brooke East Africa for supporting this initiative and helping communities turn knowledge into practical solutions that strengthen animal welfare and rural livelihoods.
