Sometimes, the best stories begin with a setback.
This week, we spent time with the Boloi Self-Help Group in Msorongo, Mwatate Sub County, Taita Taveta County. The group came together with one goal: to improve the welfare of their donkeys.
They received training on pasture establishment, hay harvesting, and fodder storage. They also planted pasture, hoping to produce enough feed for the dry season. Unfortunately, the rains were delayed, and most of the pasture did not germinate.
But they did not give up.
With the knowledge they had gained and a fodder bank supported through the project with funding from The Brooke East Africa, they turned to the naturally growing grass around them. They harvested it, baled it and stored it for the months ahead.
Anyone who knows Msorongo understands how harsh the dry season can be. When the grass disappears, livestock struggle. Every bale stored today is a step towards protecting donkeys, cattle, goats and other livestock when feed becomes scarce.
What started as an effort to improve donkey welfare is now helping entire households become more prepared for the dry season. Healthy donkeys continue supporting families with transport and farm work, while the stored hay gives other livestock a better chance during difficult months.
