Domestic violence is a national issue.
But for many Black and African women in the UK, it is also a cultural, social, and systemic challenge.
Too often, survivors face barriers that go beyond the abuse itself:
▪ Cultural expectations that prioritise family reputation over personal safety
▪ Pressure to remain silent to “protect” the community
▪ Fear of isolation, stigma, or not being understood
▪ Limited access to culturally competent support services
In many cases, women are not just escaping violence, they are navigating layers of silence, expectation, and invisibility.
At African Women Against Domestic Violence, we are working to change this.
We believe:
✔ Abuse is never a cultural norm
✔ Silence should never be mistaken for strength
✔ Every woman deserves support that understands her lived experience
This is not just a community issue, it is a public health, safeguarding, and equality issue.
We call on:
🔹 Organisations to invest in culturally informed services
🔹 Leaders to amplify underrepresented voices
🔹 Communities to challenge harmful norms
🔹 Individuals to listen, support, and act
Real change happens when awareness turns into action.
