As we mark National Substance Use Prevention Week, it’s important to reflect on the global impact of alcohol use.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2018, more than 3 million people die each year as a result of alcohol consumption and among young adults alcohol is a leading risk factor for ill health and premature death.
Alcohol use also contributes significantly to the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) underscoring the need for stronger prevention, education and systems-level responses.
