The AHAPPY Training of Trainers for 22 prison catechists and chaplains serving correctional institutions across Kenya’s Nyanza Region kicked off today.

The first day focused on self-awareness and integral human development, helping participants understand that effective accompaniment begins with understanding and caring for oneself. Anchored in the Ignatian principle of cura personalis—care for the whole person—participants explored the five dimensions of human development: physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.

Facilitator Sch. Peter Onah Agi guided participants in reflecting on their identity as people created in the image and likeness of God, while introducing the African philosophy of Ubuntu — “I am because we are.” The reflection highlighted how our humanity is shaped through relationships with others and how this understanding can strengthen the way prison pastoral agents accompany those under their care.

Ms. Lilian Waweru further engaged participants on physical, emotional and intellectual intelligence, exploring how understanding our emotions, communicating effectively, making sound decisions and caring for our physical and emotional well-being are essential for effective accompaniment.

The sessions encouraged participants to look inward, recognize their strengths and areas for growth, and appreciate the importance of caring for themselves as they accompany young people in correctional facilities.

At the close of Day 1, Fr. Dennis Kimweri, Chaplain at the Regional Command Office, Nyanza Region, appreciated the facilitators for the insightful sessions, noting that participants had gained new knowledge and perspectives that would strengthen their ministry.

The journey continues as we equip agents of hope and positive change to promote holistic development, responsible decision-making and a stigma-free generation among young people. 💙

The five-day AJAN HIV and AIDS Prevention Programme for the Youth (AHAPPY) Training of Trainers for Prison Catechists and Chaplains from Kenya prison western Region Kenya concluded on 29 August 2026 with the certification of 15 Prison Catechists.

The training was a journey of learning, reflection and personal growth, equipping participants with practical skills to listen, guide and empower inmates and young people in their care.

Through reflections, group discussions and practical activities, participants explored self-awareness, emotional resilience, healthy relationships, responsible decision-making and holistic human development.

As the newly certified catechists return to their respective prisons, they carry with them renewed knowledge, skills and commitment to listen, guide, empower and build hope among those they serve.

Know yourself. Lead with values. Take the lead. Spearhead change.

African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN) in collaboration with Kenya Catholic Prisons Chaplaincy is currently undertaking a five-day AHAPPY Training of Trainers for 16 prison catechists and chaplains from the Western Region in Busia Kenya.

Day One began with “Awakening to Myself”, exploring the five dimensions of the human person—spiritual, physical, social, emotional and intellectual.

A powerful reflection by Ms. Sergon Pascalia used a tomato pierced with toothpicks to illustrate how life's challenges can weigh on us. For prison chaplains and catechists, who carry their own burdens while listening to and supporting inmates, the message was clear: those who care for others must also recognise and care for themselves.

The sessions, facilitated by Ms. Sergon Pascalia, Ms. Lilian Waweru and Mr. Dennis Owuoche, set the tone for four more days of learning, reflection and transformation.

Awakening to oneself. Growing in resilience. Becoming people for others.
