Women and youth are critical players in climate change governance. However, they often remain systematically excluded from decision-making processes.
To address these systemic challenges, we trained 40 women and youth leaders from Kibuyuni and Mwazaro in Lungalunga Sub-County through the WE CARE initiative.
The participants were equipped with leadership and Evidence-Based Advocacy (EBA) skills to strengthen their confidence to take up leadership roles in climate adaptation governance and engage collectively in advocacy and decision-making processes.
The knowledge and skills gained will promote their meaningful participation in climate adaptation governance and policy advocacy, while enabling them to sustain advocacy efforts and influence decision-making processes within climate change governance structures.
The WE CARE initiative is funded by Plan International Kenya through the COSME Project.

Today, we concluded our two-day capacity-building workshop on gender inclusion for the leadership of Beach Management Units (BMUs).
Through our Women and Youth Empowerment for Climate Adaptation and Resilience (WE CARE) initiative, funded by Plan International Kenya, the workshop brought together BMU leaders from Jimbo, Kibuyuni, and Mwazaro in Lungalunga sub-county.

The training aimed to strengthen institutional capacity and equip BMU leadership with the knowledge and skills needed to promote, support, and institutionalize the meaningful participation and leadership of women and youth in climate adaptation governance.

The WE CARE initiative seeks to amplify the voices of women and youth, strengthen evidence-based advocacy, and institutionalize locally led climate solutions within community-level governance structures.

On Thursday, HUDA was honoured to join members of the Mrima Hill Farm Owners CBO as they unveiled their newly established village committees.
The meeting brought together the leadership of the CBO, community members, civil society representatives, environmental rights defenders, and other development partners. Despite the heavy rains, community members turned out in large numbers, affirming their commitment to this noble cause.
We commend the Mrima Hill community for taking these important early steps in community organising ahead of the much-anticipated exploitation of the critical minerals at Mrima Hill.

Our team of Women Environmental Defenders from Kwale spent the past week in Nairobi learning, sharing experiences, and strengthening their voices alongside fellow defenders from other counties.

The capacity-building workshop, convened by the Women Human Rights Defenders Hub- The Hub, focused on strengthening skills in environmental advocacy, policy engagement, and community mobilization. These skills are critical as women continue to stand at the forefront of protecting our environment and advancing climate justice.

Back home in Kwale County, these women are already leading change. Through HUDA’s community-driven initiatives, they champion mangrove restoration, promote nature-based solutions and sustainable natural resource management, and mobilize women and youth to respond to the growing impacts of climate change. Their work is helping coastal communities strengthen resilience while protecting vital ecosystems for future generations.

Women and youth remain a critical pillar in advancing environmental protection and climate adaptation. At HUDA, we remain committed to amplifying the voices of women and youth and ensuring they are actively involved in community-led climate solutions.

We appreciate the continued support of The Hub in empowering women environmental defenders across the country.

Through the project, a team of ToTs was trained on Evidence-Based Advocacy (EBA) by Plan International Kenya. The trained ToTs have since embarked on cascading this knowledge to community champions.

Over the past week, HUDA’s trained EBA ToTs began training community environmental champions in Evidence-Based Advocacy. The champions were drawn from Msambweni, Lungalunga, and Matuga sub-counties and comprised HUDA staff, volunteers, and youth and women leaders.

The training aimed to strengthen participants’ advocacy skills on gender-responsive climate change adaptation. Additionally, it enhanced their capacity to apply Evidence-Based Advocacy in addressing environmental challenges and in promoting inclusive and gender-responsive climate initiatives at the community level.

The training covered key modules, including climate change and climate justice in Africa, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), feminist advocacy, Evidence-Based Advocacy, and risk management planning. Following the training, participants identified gender-specific climate change advocacy issues to champion within their communities.
