Meet the crablet. 🦀

Small enough to fit in your hand. Grown to market size by families on Kenya's coast, sold for a real income, and quietly helping restore one of the world's most important coastal ecosystems in the process.

Our Crabs Alive project takes pressure off wild mud crab populations by giving communities a farmed alternative - one they run themselves, that generates steady revenue, and that gives the mangroves space to recover.

Over two-thirds of the families involved are women. The crabs thrive. The mangroves breathe. The community builds something lasting.

Built in partnership with Tsavo Trust and the Kamungi community, the Kamungi Banda Eco-Lodge creates employment opportunities, supports local development projects, and helps protect vital wildlife habitat along the boundary of Tsavo East National Park.

Designed as a long-term eco-tourism initiative, the lodge demonstrates how conservation and community development can work hand in hand.

Revenue generated through the project supports local livelihoods, conservation efforts, and future community-led growth.

Conservation works best when the people living alongside wildlife benefit too.

Protect, Empower, Repeat.

Happy 100th Birthday Sir David Attenborough - a voice that has inspired generations to see, appreciate, and protect the natural world.

His legacy reminds us that conservation is not built through one grand gesture, but through persistent action, collective effort, and people who choose to care.

Whether big or small, every action matters. Every restored habitat, every protected species, every community supported - it all adds up.

Hope lives through Action - Join us in creating positive change.

Many hands. One future. 💚🌍🙌

Despite careful planning, crops like cowpeas and maize haven’t taken this particular shamba. A reminder of just how dry and unpredictable this landscape is.

But this is part of the process. Through the 10% Fence Plan, farmers can trial and refine permaculture techniques in a focused area - learning what works, what doesn’t, and how to adapt.

Progress here isn’t linear. It’s iterative, and it’s shared. 💚

Within a farmer's 10% fenced area, this water capture system has collected enough rain to support the household through to September.

You’ll also spot floating platforms placed there to help bees from the farmer's nearby apiary safely access water, supporting honey production.

Simple, thoughtful systems supporting both people and nature. 💚

Within the protected 10% of his land, this farmer has built an apiary - secured with wire to keep out honey badgers and protect his income.

These safe zones allow farmers to diversify their livelihoods, while the remaining 90% stays open for wildlife to move freely. 🐘🦁🐆

Less reliance on crops alone creates more resilience for farming communities, and in some cases, bees can even act as a natural deterrent to elephants - subtly reducing conflict.

This is how layered solutions begin to take shape. 🐝🍯

Some updates from the field where a beneficiary of the 10% Fence Plan is growing millet - a valuable cash crop, safely behind his fence. With simple techniques like mulching and soil restoration, even a small, focused area can help regenerate the land and support reliable income.

Practical, local solutions making a tangible difference. 🌾🍲🪙

Kyalo, a 10% Fence Plan farmer, recently had a leopard pass through his land. Agile as ever, it made it over the fence - but thanks to secure chicken housing, no harm was done.

This is what coexistence looks like: protecting livelihoods while allowing wildlife to move freely. Finding that balance is at the heart of everything we do. 🙌🐆🐔

Out here, homes are built the same way farms are run ➡️ using what the land provides. 🌿🛖 Mud, grass, and water are shaped into bricks, creating durable homes rooted in tradition and self-reliance.

This resourcefulness reflects the heart of the 10% Fence Plan: empowering people to strengthen their livelihoods without extracting more from the environment.

Water loss is one of the biggest challenges here. By introducing Azolla, a fast-growing aquatic plant, evaporation is reduced and water can be stored far longer through the dry season - even under intense sun.

Simple knowledge can completely change what’s possible. 💧🌿
