Today we successfully concluded a powerful 2-day Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) training in West Pokot County with members of the Nasokol Agroecology and Tree Nursery Farmers Group a key step toward strengthening farmer-led agroecology and building trusted local food systems.

The training created a practical learning space for farmers to deepen their understanding of organic farming systems, certification processes, market opportunities, and group organization for effective PGS implementation.

Key areas discussed included:
• Global organic market outlook and the IFOAM perspective
• Organic consumers and buyer expectations from suppliers
• Organic standards and certification
• Certification inspection processes
• Risk assessment and management
• Farm-level checks and product flow systems
• Group dynamics and leadership
• New group structuring for the Nasokol Agroecology and Tree Nursery PGS Group
• Steps for PGS implementation
• Way forward and collective action points

More than just a training, this was the beginning of a movement toward healthier soils, safer food, stronger farmer networks, and greater market opportunities for small-scale producers.
By strengthening local certification systems and farmer organization, the group is now better equipped to build trust with consumers, improve livelihoods, and take ownership of a more sustainable and resilient food system.
In West Pokot, the seeds of change are taking root

BIBA Kenya was in West Pokot to engage with the County Department of Agriculture through a joint planning process aimed at shaping shared priorities and coordinated actions for the remainder of the year.
The process helped align ongoing initiatives, strengthen collaboration between partners, and build stronger synergy among actors supporting the agroecology transition. A key outcome was a renewed commitment to ensuring all activities remain grounded in farmer realities, local knowledge, and inclusive participation.

The engagement also provided a valuable opportunity to document ongoing agroecology work our farmers are doing in the county, capturing progress, lessons, and emerging practices from the field to support learning and coordination.
This growing collaboration reflects a stronger push toward resilient, farmer-led food systems in West Pokot, driven by agroecology and sustainable livelihoods.

Special appreciation goes to the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries,Hon Wilfred Longronyang, for his support and engagement in strengthening coordination on ongoing agroecology work. Great things ahead.🙏

Happy international Seeds Day !!!

On this great day we would like to remind you that, seeds hold the wisdom of generations shaped by culture, climate, and community. They connect people to their history while securing their future, offering diversity that strengthens ecosystems and resilience in the face of climate change.

Across many communities, women continue to play a central role in selecting, saving, and passing on these seeds, ensuring that knowledge and nourishment are not lost. When farmers protect and exchange indigenous seeds, they are safeguarding more than crops they are defending livelihoods, dignity, and the right to define their own food systems.

This is how communities build resilience, strengthen solidarity, and reclaim control over what they grow and eat. The future of food depends not on uniformity, but on diversity rooted in local knowledge and care.
Save. Share. Sow.

Advancing Agroecology in West Pokot County!
Today, BIBA Kenya participated in the development of the West Pokot County Agroecology Policy and Implementation Framework a bold and strategic step toward transforming agriculture and livelihoods across the county.

This framework goes beyond policy it emphasizes practical, real-world solutions grounded in farmers experiences and local farming systems. At its core, it prioritizes:
• Soil health as the foundation for restoring degraded lands and easing pressure on rangelands
• Addressing invasive species through sustainable land management
• Promoting agroforestry and agrobiodiversity conservation through landscape-level thinking
• Supporting value addition and viable enterprise choices to boost productivity and farmer incomes

This is more than a plan it’s a pathway to resilient food systems, empowered farmers, restored ecosystems, and sustainable futures.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the CEC Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Hon. Wilfred Longronyang, the Department of Agriculture, and all partners in West Pokot for their continued dedication to advancing agroecology.
Special thanks to Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung -HBS for their unwavering support in making this work possible.
BIBA Kenya remains committed to anchoring agroecology at the heart of Kenya’s agricultural transformation where people, nature, and prosperity thrive together.

Today marked a significant step forward in strengthening local organic certification systems.
We successfully hosted a Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) training in Ngararia, Kandara Sub-County, Murang’a, for our members MUNET. The session brought together committed farmers eager to deepen their understanding of PGS and its role in building trust, transparency, and local market access.

The training focused on key PGS elements, the roles of different PGS committees, and the step-by-step process of developing a PGS group manual. Through active discussions and shared experiences, farmers gained practical knowledge to support the establishment and management of credible, community-driven certification systems.

Next steps will include the formation of PGS committees within the group, the development of a comprehensive PGS manual, and the identification of a priority product or value chain that will ultimately receive the Kilimo Hai certification. This will be a key milestone in linking farmers to trusted organic markets.
This is more than just training it’s about empowering farmers, strengthening networks, and advancing agroecology through locally rooted solutions.

For too long, Persons Living with Disabilities have been left on the margins of our food systems facing barriers to land, knowledge, and even access to safe, nutritious food. Yet the right to healthy food belongs to everyone.

During our recent agroecology training held at Laikipia permaculture center, PLWD and youth didn’t just learn how to manufacture bio-inputs they stepped into their power as changemakers. From understanding the risks of harmful pesticides to creating their own safe, sustainable solutions, the transformation was real and inspiring.
But this is not where it ends. Their voices are now part of something bigger the development and implementation of the Laikipia County Agroecology Policy. Because true change means those most affected must be at the table, shaping the systems that impact their lives.

When PLWD and Youth are included, when their knowledge is valued, and when they have access to agroecological food and production systems, we build communities that are stronger, fairer, and more resilient.
At BIBA Kenya, we believe the future of food must be inclusive because food sovereignty means everyone counts. And in Laikipia, that future is already unfolding.

A Defining Moment for Agroecology in Laikipia.👏👏

Today was more than just a meeting it was a powerful step toward reclaiming our food systems, restoring our soils, and strengthening the future of our communities.
Leaders, partners, and stakeholders came together with one shared purpose: to drive forward the Agroecology Policy and Bill and turn vision into action.

At the heart of this milestone was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) spearheaded by Laikipia county government, BIBA Kenya together with its partners Biovison Africa Trust and Digital Green a strong and deliberate commitment to scale agroecology, protect biodiversity, and advance food sovereignty. This partnership represents more than collaboration; it is a shared responsibility to restore dignity to farming, empower communities, and safeguard our environment for future generations.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to H.E. Joshua Irungu for his leadership and unwavering support. His commitment is helping shape a future where farmers thrive, ecosystems are restored, and communities are empowered.
This is how transformation begins through unity, courage, and action. The journey to resilient, people-centered food systems is not ahead of us it has already begun.

World Water Day 2026 Commemoration.
We successfully marked World Water Day 2026 in Mutakiri Village, Tharaka Sub-County, Tharaka-Nithi County, under the theme Water and Gender , Where water flows, equality grows.”
Together with local farmers, community groups, and leaders, BIBA Kenya in collaboration with PANET Kenya facilitated a community dialogue on the critical link between water access, gender equality, and sustainable livelihoods. Participants highlighted how women and girls often carry the greatest burden when water becomes scarce, underscoring the need to protect water as a shared public resource.
The discussions also reflected on the risks posed by the privatization and commercialization of water, which can limit access for communities that depend on natural water sources for their livelihoods.
We also had the opportunity to visit a community water project established in 1981, where local residents donated small parcels of land for the drilling of boreholes that continue to serve the Mutakiri community to date. The boreholes are fully managed and maintained by the community, demonstrating the power of collective action in ensuring that water remains accessible and available for all. To translate dialogue into action, participants also planted trees around the proposed Tharaka-Nithi Agroecological Hub, contributing to the restoration and protection of local water catchment areas.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our partner CAPPA Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa and our members SAPAD, KIBUI, RIDEP, and RUCWEP for their collaboration, commitment, and the strong spirit of cohesiveness that made this activity a success.
Protecting water sources today is key to ensuring equity, resilience, and sustainable food systems for the future.

23/03/2026

On this World Water Day, we pause to reflect on a reality that remains deeply unequal: access to safe and clean water is still out of reach for millions.
Across many communities, the burden of water collection continues to fall on women and girls. Each day, they walk long distances under harsh conditions, sacrificing time, opportunities, and, in many cases, their safety simply to meet one of life’s most basic needs.
No woman should have to spend her day searching for water.
No girl should have to risk her safety just to fetch it.
Water is life. Yet, for too many, it is also a source of hardship, inequality, and injustice. When water becomes a commodity instead of a shared resource, the most vulnerable are pushed further to the margins forced to choose between affordability, access, and dignity.
This year’s theme, Water and Gender, reminds us that water justice cannot be achieved without addressing gender inequality. Ensuring safe, accessible, and affordable water is not only a development priority it is a moral obligation and a matter of human rights.
Today, we stand in solidarity with all those still fighting for access, justice, and recognition.
