PELUM Kenya mourns the passing of Dr.Sena Aluoka, founder of Young Volunteers for the Environment (YVE), a profound leader, visionary, and passionate believer in the power and potential of young people.

Sena was full of life, brilliant, gifted, and deeply committed to building a better future for people and the planet. Through his work, he championed agroecology, environmental conservation, climate action, and youth leadership, inspiring young people to take an active role in addressing some of Africaโ€™s most pressing environmental and social challenges.

Sena also spearheaded the African Caravan to the Climate COPs, creating a powerful platform for African youth and civil society to raise their voices, share experiences, and demand meaningful climate action. His commitment to ensuring that African perspectives were heard in global climate spaces was a testament to his courage, vision, and unwavering dedication to climate justice.

Together with Sena, PELUM Kenya signed an MOU that enabled us to host the YVE Kenya Chapter, strengthening our shared commitment to youth leadership, agroecology, environmental justice, climate action, and sustainable development.

Sena believed deeply in young people and their ability to transform communities and influence the future of our planet. His passion for agroecology and climate action reflected his conviction that sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, and empowered communities are central to Africaโ€™s future.

We will remember Sena for his energy, brilliance, generosity, and unwavering belief in young people. His contribution to the environmental, agroecology, and climate movements will continue to inspire generations.

Africa has lost a great son, a champion of youth, and a passionate voice for environmental and climate justice.

Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues, the YVE community, and all those whose lives he touched.

Rest in peace๐Ÿ™

The Kenya Youth in Agrifood Systems Summit (KYASS) 2026 has come to a close.

Three days of conversations, debates, innovation, exhibitions, commitments, and field learning brought together young changemakers, policymakers, researchers, innovators, farmers, and partners around one ambition:

They challenged assumptions. They debated whether can feed Africa and create dignified jobs. They explored One Health, technology, land, finance, markets, policy and investment. They showcased products, businesses and innovations that prove youth are already creating solutions.

Then, we took those conversations from the room to the field, seeing research, agroecology, , urban agriculture, seed technology, food production, and youth-led in practice.

PELUM Kenya is proud to celebrate the upcoming launch of the Laikipia County Agroecology Policy 2026โ€“2032 tomorrow, on Friday, 4 September 2026, at the Governorโ€™s Compound in Nanyuki.

The policy provides an important framework for transforming and systems through sustainable agroecological practices that promote , , healthy ecosystems and inclusive green growth.

PELUM Kenya has been part of this journey from the beginning, working closely with the Laikipia County Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and supporting stakeholder engagement, consultations and public participation throughout the policy development process.

We celebrate Laikipia County for taking this bold and important step towards building more sustainable, inclusive and resilient food systems.

PELUM Kenya with it's member organizations and partners (SACDEP Kenya, OACK, RODI Kenya, ICE Kenya, COSDEP, KOAN, Digital Green and Practical Action)participated in the School Meals Partner Convening in Rwanda, joining partners for a practical learning journey on how can contribute to healthier, more sustainable and locally rooted school meals.

As part of the learning journey, we visited Solid Africa Farm and Byujuju School Kitchen & School Garden, where we explored the connection between farmers, schools, communities and school feeding programmes.

One of the key reflections from the discussions was that regenerative school meals are not only about what is on the plate; they are about building a food system that works for farmers, learners, schools and communities.

Some key lessons stood out:

1. Farmers need predictable markets, fair payment systems and incentives to sustainably supply schools with diverse and nutritious foods.
2. Schools can become important anchors for local by linking procurement with local farmers and supporting school gardens and practical learning for learners.
3. Parent and community ownership is critical for sustainability. Contributions can take many forms: financial support, land, labour, water, knowledge or participation in school committees.
4. Infrastructure matters. Water availability and quality, storage and delivery systems are essential, particularly when working with fresh and perishable foods.
5. We also heard the importance of evidence: demonstrating affordability, improved dietary diversity, value for money, local economic benefits and other outcomes that can help decision makers champion regenerative school meals.
6. Above all, regenerative school meals require collaboration across education, agriculture, health, finance, government, schools, farmers, parents and communities.

For PELUM Kenya, the experience provided valuable opportunities to reflect on what can be adapted to our own context, including stronger farmer-school linkages, , local procurement and practical models that can make school meals both nutritious and sustainable.

We have proudly concluded the Northern Frontier Youth in Agrifood Systems Dialogue in , marking the successful finale of the regional dialogue series.

The forum brought together 60 young agri-entrepreneurs, sector leaders, Isiolo County representatives, and other stakeholders to reflect on key policy frameworks, including ASTGS and CAADP, and to validate regional priorities for inclusion in the National Youth in Agri-Food Systems Strategy.

๐—ช๐—ต๐˜† ๐—œ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ผ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€

Resilient pastoralist communities and dryland landscapes uniquely shape Isioloโ€™s food system. The dialogue explored opportunities across livestock value chains, dryland agriculture, apiculture, digital extension, and agro-processing.

One message came through strongly: young people are not waiting for opportunities; they are already creating enterprises, innovating, and feeding communities.

The question is whether our systems are ready to support them to scale.

The dialogue generated key recommendations:

1๏ธโƒฃ Strengthen market access and product certification, move beyond simply onboarding youth to building ecosystems that enable existing agri-enterprises to grow and scale.
2๏ธโƒฃ Expand accessible, youth-responsive financing and incubation tailored to the realities of young entrepreneurs.
3๏ธโƒฃ Domesticate the National Agroecology Strategy within Isiolo County to reflect local priorities and dryland realities.
4๏ธโƒฃ Develop a National Youth in Agri-Food Systems Strategy, anchored in the National Agroecology Strategy (NAS) and National Agricultural Sector Investment Plan (NASIP).
5๏ธโƒฃ Create inclusive youth policy spaces and leadership opportunities, including a youth caucus that can actively participate in governance, policy processes, and social accountability around the Isiolo County CIDP and budget.

From pastoralism to beekeeping, from dryland farming to digital innovation, Isioloโ€™s young people are demonstrating that the future of food systems is already here.

Over two inspiring days, PELUM Kenya proudly joined young people, partners, and stakeholders in commemorating 2026 International Youth Day under the theme "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations." The event showcased the power of youth as , , and champions of sustainable food systems.

Day 1 brought Machakos to life with a vibrant youth caravan, innovation showcases, exhibitions, media engagements, creative performances, sports, networking, and the recognition of outstanding young innovators. It was a powerful reminder that when young people are given , they become catalysts for change.

Day 2 shifted the focus to learning and practical inspiration. Young agripreneurs shared their success stories, participants competed in an engaging Kahoot challenge, and the celebrations culminated in a field visit to Kavyuni, where participants experienced firsthand how youth-led are transforming livelihoods through .

At PELUM Kenya, we believe that investing in young people means investing in resilient communities and sustainable food systems. By creating spaces for learning, innovation, networking, and practical exchange, we continue to nurture the next generation of agroecology champions who will shape a more sustainable and food-secure future.
