Independence Day Best Wishes

The Mount Kenya University South Sudanese Students' Association - MKUSSSA wishes the patriotic citizens of South Sudan, from all walks of life, a happy Independence Day. Today, in 2011, our flag was raised high, symbolizing the birth of our sovereign nation.

We owe this sovereignty to the steadfast pledge and sacrifices of our forefathers. We pay tribute to our fallen heroes and heroines who valiantly fought for the freedom we enjoy today. While it is easy for the departed to fade from memory, we must remember that their ultimate sacrifice secured freedom we so much cherished.

We also express our deep respect for those who bear the scars of liberation, both physically and emotionally. The pride of freedom and the spirit of liberty shall continue to uplift their courage and honor. They have dedicated their lives to a higher cause. Although the path to a free South Sudan, and the subsequent independent government, may not have been as smooth as anticipated, the objectives have been realized.

Today, as we commemorate our independence, we pay homage to the children of our liberators and the brave mothers who took care of them them during the arduous struggle for our freedom. These people endured the hardships of those challenging days. They stood side by side with their loved ones and experienced the bitter realities of the fight for liberation.

To those who were left orphaned in the pursuit of freedom, it may feel as though the new nation has forgotten you. Nonetheless, the spirit of independence will forever elevate your dignity and pride.

To all citizens of our Motherland, whether residing within or beyond our borders, Independence Day serves as a token of the fruits of our collective struggle. Each and every one of us has experienced the acrimony of our journey towards liberation.

Fellow citizens, while we have achieved independence, our country continues to grapple with numerous trials. These trails are reminiscent of the struggles we faced before. While we take pride in our accomplishments thus far, we must remain steadfast in our pursuit of a South Sudan that fulfills our collective aspirations.

The pursuit of knowledge through science, technology, literature, and the arts will propel us towards the realization of our dream South Sudan. It is incumbent upon us all, irrespective of our involvement in politics, to contribute our efforts towards uplifting our nation from the aftermath of war and economic disintegration.

Wishing you a joyous Independence Day, South Sudan!
Happy Independence Day, Africa!

Today, on Madaraka Day, The Mount Kenya University South Sudanese Students Association passes its regards to the proud people of Kenya, and to all our brethren across the African continent. Today, we do not only commemorate Kenyan attainment of self-governance, we, with equal pride, celebrate the intertwined arras of African independence, where the liberation of one nation rechoes as an inspiration for the emancipation of another.

From the northern lands of Algeria to the southern tip of South Africa, the echoes of freedom have cascaded through the valleys and plains, interlacing our destinies as nations. The struggles of our brothers and sisters in Ghana, led by the indomitable Kwame Nkrumah, reverberated across the continent, and fueled the flames of liberation. Meanwhile the winds of change swept through the lands of Africa, the yearning for self-determination spread like wildfire, crossing borders, igniting hearts, and uniting us in a shared aspiration.

Tanzania, led by the visionary Julius Nyerere, stood as a beacon of hope and solidarity. Tanzania offered support and sanctuary to liberation movements and revolutionaries throughout the continent. The spirit of Pan-Africanism infused the hearts of leaders like Mzee Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Ahmed Sékou Touré of Guinea, and Amílcar Cabral of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Their collective efforts formed the threads that wove our dreams of independence into a bright hanging wall of unity and patriotism.

As each nation broke free from the shackles of colonial rule, their triumphs resonated beyond their borders. The neighboring nations were thus inspired to rise against oppression. The triumphant cries of Zimbabwe's independence under the leadership of Robert Mugabe broke across the Zambezi, stirring the souls of Namibians and South Africans. The flames of liberation were ignited in their hearts.

In turn, the brave struggles of Nelson Mandela and his compatriots in South Africa illuminated the path for the freedom fighters of Angola, Mozambique, and countless other nations still yearning for their dawn of independence. The liberation of one became the guiding star for others. The spirit of solidarity and brotherhood bound us together in a shared pursuit of self-governance.

Finally, the birth of Africa's youngest nation, South Sudan, on July 9, 2011, stands a witness that the quest for self-governance knows no boundaries of age or history. South Sudan added to the pride of Africanism. Today, South Sudanese call Kenya home, and Kenyans view South Sudan in the same light.

Every independence day celebrated by an African nation brings to mind the interconnectedness of our struggles and victories. Each achievement, each triumph, serves as a strong witness to the steadfast spirit of Africa. It reminds us that our destinies are but one. The freedom of one nation is inseparable from the freedom of another, and the independence we cherish today is the result of the collective sacrifices of our ancestors and their firm belief in the potential of our great continent.

On this Madaraka Day, we are happy to read history, dine and wine in the pride of the liberation of Kenya and the journey towards self-governance. We also celebrate as brothers and sisters born and nurtured by the delicate hands of mother Africa. We therefore look forward with optimism to a borderless Africa—an Africa in which the children of its womb roam without unnecessary restrictions; an Africa in which peace, prosperity, and shared progress forever reign supreme.

Happy Madaraka Day, Africa!
