Gashagi ECD has served the community since the 1980s and currently supports 90 children in PP1 and PP2, yet its infrastructure has seen little to no improvement over the years.
One classroom is permanent. The other is a temporary iron sheet structure built next to the kitchen, exposing children to smoke, flooding during rainy seasons, and unsafe learning conditions.
Beyond infrastructure, the challenges run deeper.
Three toilets serve all the children. Learning and play materials are insufficient. There is no formal daycare for children aged 0 to 3, leaving many to roam the village unsupervised, especially during school holidays.
The surrounding community faces extreme economic hardship. Many parents, particularly women and adolescent girls, work in nearby quarries for as little as Ksh 10 per bucket of stones. Teen motherhood is common and, teachers sometimes have to collect children from home just to keep them in school.
And yet, Gashagi ECD continues to be a lifeline.
WEMIHS is working to create safe spaces, support caregivers, and protect vulnerable children through early intervention. This work needs partners, advocates, and supporters who believe that early childhood is not negotiable.
