Education begins with a healthy child!

As we continue fighting period poverty, mental health challenges and Gender Based Violence through our community programs, we have painfully discovered another silent crisis affecting ECDE learners across Tharaka Nithi County, hunger and poor nutrition amongst ECDE learners.

Many children report to school on empty stomachs. Some cannot concentrate in class, others sleep through lessons, while many struggle with slow cognitive development because their bodies and brains lack proper nourishment. A hungry child cannot fully learn, dream or compete equally.

This is why the Initiative is not just a feeding program. It is an investment in education, health, dignity and the future of our community.

A simple cup of porridge every school day can:
• Improve concentration and memory retention
• Boost cognitive growth and brain development
• Increase school attendance and participation
• Reduce fatigue and classroom absenteeism
• Improve academic performance among ECDE learners
• Support healthy physical growth during critical developmental years

The foundation of every successful society is laid in early childhood education. If our ECDE learners are underfed today, we risk raising a generation that is academically disadvantaged before they even begin their journey.

The CUP OF UJI Initiative seeks to ensure that no child in Tharaka Nithi sits in class hungry while trying to learn alphabets, numbers and life skills. Because feeding a child is not charity, it is building human capital.

Together, we can nourish minds, restore hope and secure a stronger future for our children.

A cup of Uji today ~ a brighter generation tomorrow.

We marked a powerful step forward in the fight against FGM as the Youth Anti-FGM Network Kenya (YANK) Tharaka Nithi County Chapter was officially launched at Chiakariga Girls High School.

As AFRICOMM Development Centre, we were proud to partner with the Anti FGM Board-Kenya and YANK in supporting this important youth-led engagement aimed at protecting girls, preserving dignity, and creating safer communities.

Despite the county’s prevalence rate remaining above the national average, the energy, commitment and courage shown by young people today reminds us that change is possible — and unstoppable.

This is more than a workshop; it is the beginning of a movement. Together, we look forward to building a generation that will help end FGM in Tharaka Nithi County and across Kenya.

Is democracy a fallacy❓❓
but it becomes weak when citizens go silent.

Whether through elections or consensus (horizontal democracy),
no system works without active, informed, and courageous citizens.

Consensus can unite—but it can also be manipulated if a few decide for all.
Elections can empower—but they can also be corrupted if votes are bought.

The truth is simple:
The strength of democracy is not in the method, but in the people.

Our responsibility:
Show up. Speak up. Reject bribery. Demand accountability.

Because when citizens are passive, democracy fails.
But when citizens are awake—
no system can be captured.

Civic education spaces SHRINKING!!

The CIVICUS Monitor paints a clear picture of civic space across the world—ranging from Open, Narrowed, Obstructed, Repressed, to Closed.

In 2025, Kenya was downgraded from “obstructed” to “repressed” — a serious warning that civic freedoms are increasingly constrained, and citizen voice is shrinking.

A repressed civic space means:

Freedoms exist, but are heavily limited
Civic education and public participation spaces are restricted
Citizens face barriers in holding leaders accountable

This is why Civic Education spaces matter now more than ever. They empower citizens with knowledge, amplify their voices, and strengthen democracy, justice, and good leadership.

The message is simple:
When civic space shrinks, democracy weakens.
When citizens rise to protect it, the nation grows stronger.

🚨SafeGuarding Civic space and education in TNC and our communities 🚨

Civic space is not just a concept—it is the breathing room of democracy. It is where citizens speak, organize, question leadership, and shape the future of their communities. Without it, even the strongest constitutions become silent documents.

Globally, CIVICUS reminds us that civic space exists on a spectrum: from open societies where freedoms are respected, to closed ones where dissent is silenced. The recent downgrade of Kenya’s civic space from “obstructed” to “repressed” should concern every citizen.
It signals a shrinking environment where voices are constrained, participation is limited, and accountability becomes harder to achieve.

Why does this matter?

Because civic space is the foundation of:
Democracy – where citizens actively participate, not just vote.
Justice – where people can demand fairness without fear.
Good leadership – where leaders are held accountable by an informed and empowered public.

Civic education spaces—community forums, media platforms, public participation meetings, and civil society engagements—play a critical role in keeping this foundation strong. They:
✅Equip citizens with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities;
✅Encourage meaningful participation in governance
✅Create platforms to question, challenge, and improve leadership
✅Strengthen transparency and accountability at all levels.

When these spaces are weakened, citizens become passive. When they are protected, citizens become powerful.

Safeguarding civic space is therefore not just the responsibility of activists or organizations—it is a duty for all of us. It calls for:

✅Speaking up against injustice and restrictions.
✅Supporting platforms that promote dialogue and public participation.
✅Demanding openness, transparency, and respect for rights.
✅Standing in solidarity with those who defend civic freedoms.

A nation thrives when its people are heard, informed, and engaged. Kenya’s future depends on citizens who are not only aware—but active, vigilant, and united in protecting the space that allows democracy to flourish.

Let us protect civic space—because when citizens rise, leadership improves, justice prevails, and democracy lives.

Her Voice, Our Future!!

Why is it still so hard for young women to enter leadership?

This Saturday 21st starting at 10am, HATUA NOW Session 8, we go beyond the surface to unpack and demystify women’s leadership — confronting the real barriers: political violence and intimidation, limited access to campaign financing, and the invisible weight of unpaid care work.

This dialogue is about truth, courage, and solutions.
We will challenge systems, question norms, and demand accountability — because policies alone are not enough without action.

If we are serious about inclusive leadership, then we must create spaces where women are safe, supported, and empowered to make decisions and lead.

Join the conversation here or in our Africomm office, (at Abednego hse, first floor, RM 2).
Be part of the change ~ Because when women rise, leadership transforms!!
