Tharaka Women's Welfare Program

Tharaka Women's Welfare Program Commonly known as "NTANIRA NA MUGAMBO" or (circumcision by words) the first ARP in Kenya.

Tharaka Women’s Welfare Programme (TWWP) began in 2005 to eradicate female ge***al mutilation (FGM) in Tharaka through an alternative rite of passage (ARP) program. TWWP has since expanded on this program, to also include the promotion of girls’ education through sponsorship, adult literacy, as well as improving the standards of living for women in the community by helping them to build their econ

omic, social, and life skills capacity in order to cope with a culture that is domineering towards women. The aim of the program is to create an environment where women and girls are actively involved in development issues.

Today, our ICT lab became a launchpad for dreams! We hosted the talented basketball learners from Kajiunduthi Junior School, who came to watch YouTube reels on basketball skills as they prepare for tomorrow’s regional competition in Embu.
Their story reminds us of Julius Yego, the ‘YouTube Man’ from Kenya, who taught himself javelin through YouTube videos and rose to become a world champion. Just like Yego, these young stars are showing that determination, curiosity, and the willingness to learn can turn small steps into giant leaps.
We saw focus, passion, and teamwork in action, and we are confident that tomorrow, they will step onto the court ready to shine. From screen to court, the journey of champions starts with a single spark of learning.

Good luck, Kajiunduthi Junior School!!
May your hard work and dedication take you to new heights!!

As we reflect on the impactful International Women’s Day celebration held on 20th March,2026 at Kamarandi Primary School in Chiakariga Ward, we take pride in the spirit of inclusivity that defined the event.
Among the guests were remarkable persons living with disabilities who continue to inspire through their resilience and contribution to society.
Penina Kambura, a visually impaired lecturer at Meru Teachers Training College, graced the event with her presence, symbolizing determination, excellence, and the power of education in breaking barriers.
We were also honored to have Gerald Nthumbi, a person living with disability and a retired Adult Literacy Officer, whose lifelong dedication to education and community empowerment remains a great inspiration.
Their presence was a powerful reminder that inclusion matters. It reinforced the importance of creating spaces where everyone, regardless of ability can participate, contribute, and be celebrated.
As Tharaka Women Welfare Programme, we remain committed to promoting inclusivity, equal opportunities, and dignity for all as we continue championing the rights of women and girls in our community.
Together, we move forward—leaving no one behind!

Somewhere between ideas and reality...
The room has come alive with quiet consultations, focused coding sessions, shared laughs, music playing in the background to keep everyone going , and snacks to keep the energy on.

Our first 24-hour coding challenge is ongoing, and slowly, idea by idea, solutions are coming to life. It’s not just about coding It’s about teamwork, creativity, and believing in what’s possible.
And in this space, one thing is clear, girls belong in tech, and their ideas matter.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our generous donor Rendon Lafaurie
for the donation of four high-quality laptops, which are playing a key role in enabling learning, creativity, and innovation throughout this challenge.

Press Release - International Women’s Day Celebration at Kamarandi Primary School, Chiakariga

Today, the Tharaka Women Welfare Programme (TWWP) marked International Women’s Day with a memorable event held at Kamarandi Primary School in Chiakariga Ward. The event was graced by Mary Lairumbi HSC, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of Chiakariga, who was the guest of honor and keynote speaker.
In her inspiring address, Mary Lairumbi emphasized the pivotal role that women play in families and communities. She acknowledged the resilience, strength, and tireless contributions of women, highlighting that their influence extends far beyond the household and is central to societal development. Lairumbi reminded the audience that empowering women is a critical step toward achieving a more just and equitable society.
Aniceta Kiriga HSC, Executive Director of the Tharaka Women Welfare Programme, also shared her powerful message with the women present. She urged women to embrace self-empowerment, take responsibility for their roles within families and communities, and actively participate in shaping a better future for themselves and future generations. Aniceta, also touched on the importance of men in fighting gender-based violence (GBV), encouraging them to be allies in the pursuit of gender equality and the well-being of women.
The event was a call to action for both women and men to work together towards a society where women’s rights are upheld, their voices are heard, and their potential is recognized and celebrated. TWWP is committed to empowering women and fostering a culture of mutual respect and accountability to reduce GBV and ensure equal opportunities for all.
As we reflect on this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Working Together to Promote Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls,” we renew our dedication to creating a world where every woman has the opportunity to thrive.
Let us continue to work together for a brighter, more inclusive future for women and girls everywhere.
