Last week, Thuon Gweno Foundation together with Walter Okelo Mentorship programs had the privilege of visiting Usula Mixed Senior School during the school's closing day as part of our commitment to mentorship, education support and talent development.
The visit followed a mentorship session with the students, where we encouraged them to remain focused, disciplined and committed to their education and personal growth.
During the visit, the Director of Thuon Gweno Foundation, Mr. Nick Ongoro, recognized and awarded the students who emerged as the top three candidates in the Form Four Second Term examinations. We also took time to encourage and motivate the students who recorded the lowest marks, reminding them that one examination does not define their future. With determination, guidance and support, every learner has the ability to improve.
As part of our Education Support Programme, Thuon Gweno Foundation:
📚 Cleared school fees for the top three students as a way of encouraging academic excellence.
📚 Cleared school fees for the two students who had recorded the lowest marks, demonstrating our belief that no child should be left behind because of their academic performance or financial circumstances.
👕 Provided new school uniforms to this 5 performing and non performing students students whose uniforms were worn out, helping them return to school with dignity and confidence.
Our approach is simple: we celebrate excellence while lifting those who are struggling. We believe that supporting only those at the top is not enough. The child who is struggling today may become tomorrow's greatest success story when given the right encouragement and opportunity.
Why the Boy-Child?
Thuon Gweno Foundation was established with a strong focus on the boy-child, because we believe boys also need mentorship, guidance, emotional support, education and opportunities to discover their potential.
However, our commitment to the boy-child does not mean neglecting the girl-child. Usula Mixed Senior School is a reflection of our inclusive approach. We support young people based on need, potential and vulnerability, while maintaining our special focus on addressing the gaps affecting boys.
We believe that empowering boys and supporting girls creates stronger families, responsible citizens and healthier communities.
A Call to Fathers, Mentors and the Community
As fathers, teachers, guardians, leaders and members of society, we must rise to the occasion.
Every adult has a role to play in mentoring the young people around us. A boy needs someone to listen to him, guide him, correct him, encourage him and help him understand that his life has value and purpose.
Mentorship should not begin when a child is already lost. It should begin early.
Let us be present in the lives of our children.
Let us encourage them when they succeed, support them when they struggle and remind them that failure is not the end of their journey.
