Back to School, Fresh from the Garden!

As learners return to school, the harvest is here with us, and school gardens are bringing fresh vegetables straight to the plate.
From garden to school meal, learners get to enjoy fresh, nutritious produce while experiencing firsthand the value of growing their own food.
School gardens are not just about food; they are living classrooms for building the future food system actors we need.

The chicken coop is standing, the rabbit house is here, and the rabbits are happily settled in. The learners are also back in school!
So much happened over the holidays, and we’re grateful for every bit of progress, every lesson, and every blessing along the way.
And now, there’s so much more in store for the month of September.

Advancing Agroecology and Climate Change Education

Today, Kenya convened a Policy Dialogue on the findings and recommendations of the Desk Study conducted on Agroecology and Climate Change Education.

The dialogue brought together key stakeholders to explore how the recommendations can inform policy, curriculum development, and educational practice, with a focus on advancing practical agroecology and climate change education in Kenya’s education system.

The discussions emphasized the importance of equipping learners with practical knowledge and skills to promote sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, environmental stewardship, and sustainable food systems.

From dialogue to action, building an education system that prepares young people for a climate-resilient future.

This holiday SCOPE KENYA has been busy with parents and learners; from preparing the gardens as we wait for the rains, to setting up structures and monitoring the thriving tree nurseries. The learners found joy and fun in every step, showing commitment, enthusiasm, and renewed energy throughout the activities.

The parents were not left behind either. They played an important role in ensuring that the school compound was well maintained, including establishing new horizontal gardens. Their involvement made the experience truly collaborative and inclusive.

As the holiday comes to an end, we are a little sad that our time together is almost over. This is the final week of the holiday, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have impacted future food-systems actors with valuable knowledge, practical skills, and a deeper appreciation for sustainable food production.

It has been a beautiful, engaging, and all-inclusive holiday—one filled with learning, teamwork, growth, and hope for the future.
