HISTORICAL CONTEXT
ORCWWC was established in the year 2000 as an initiative by a group of women from different denomination. The members had a shared vision and a set of common objectives all aiming at ensuring that Kenya becomes a society free of HIV&AIDS. ORCWWC was formed with a principle to support communities to respond to the HIV and AIDS epidemic in line with existing government co-ordinati
on mechanism for HIV and AIDS activities. It has strong links with Kenyan Civil Society and with the Government of Kenya. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
Ongata Rongai Christian Women Works of Charity (ORCWWC) is a Community Based Organisation (CBO) that aims at responding to the Spiritual and Social-economic challenges posed by HIV pandemic. ORCWWC is located in the Ongata Rongai Township along Magadi Road within a slum called Kware. It is within Kajiado North Sub- County of Kajiado County, in the South Rift Valley Region of Kenya. As of 2012 Kenya had a HIV prevalence rate of 7.1 percent accounting to not less than 1.4 million people who were living with the virus, (KAIS 2012). By the end of 2011 there were 22196 people living with HIV in Kajiado County. In 2011 Kajiado County had about 1,200 new adults’ infections against a national estimate of 90,963 winning a county ranking of number 24/47. Serious enough there were 1207 HIV positive pregnant women in Kajiado County in 2011 but in the same year there were 181 new HIV infections among children casting a passion to the efficiency of prevention of mother to child transmition in the county. In 2011 approximately 700 adults died of AIDS related conditions while 170 children suffered the same fate. High HIV prevalence in the county has resulted to increased number of orphan and vulnerable children in Kajiado County. According to UNICEF 2012, in 2012 there were 15482 households with orphans accounting to 10% of the total households (DHIS). Poverty and drought are other characteristics within the county that increase vulnerability to children and teenagers. ORCWWC over the years has worked tirelessly to alleviate sufferings to orphans and other vulnerable children through provision of essential services for quality improvement and dignified livelihood. ORCWWC vulnerable children are within two locations in Kajiado North namely Ongata Rongai & Nkaimurunya. A big proportion of these beneficiaries are found within the informal settlements and slums of township Kware and Gataka in Ongata Rongai town.
