Strengthening Communities Through Participatory Planning

Today, Justice And Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project kicked off a Participatory Assessment of Climate and Disaster Risks (PACDR) review session targeting the Lower Kochia area in Kochia Ward, Rangwe Sub-County.
The session brought together community members from different sections of the population to reflect on the key climate and disaster risks affecting their communities, assess existing vulnerabilities, and identify practical strategies for building resilience.
Through meaningful community participation and shared experiences, JAM continues to support communities to better understand their challenges, strengthen local capacities, and develop locally driven solutions for a more resilient and sustainable future.

Empowering Farmers, Transforming Communities
Justice and Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project, in collaboration with Equity Foundation, today successfully hosted a Farmers Field Day at JAM Model Farm in Sikri, bringing together farmers, development partners, and key stakeholders to showcase innovative agricultural solutions and strengthen resilient livelihoods.
The event provided a valuable platform for promoting sustainable agriculture, financial inclusion, knowledge sharing, and agroecological agriculture, while fostering collaboration to improve food security and economic opportunities for farming communities.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all our partners and collaborators who made this event a success, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, ICIPE, SISTEMA.bio, Chicken Village, SunCulture, IrriHub, CGA CREATES, Practical Action, and AgriAI Kenya.

Seed is more than a planting material-it is the foundation of food security, resilient farming, and sustainable livelihoods.
At Justice And Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project, we promote and support seed bulking because it empowers farming communities to produce, multiply, and preserve high-quality seeds adapted to local conditions. This ensures that farmers have reliable access to healthy, affordable seed while reducing dependence on expensive external supplies.
Seed bulking strengthens community resilience by:
• Increasing the availability of quality seed for every planting season.
• Preserving locally adapted and climate-resilient crop varieties.
• Reducing production costs for smallholder farmers.
• Improving crop yields through the use of healthy, vigorous seed.
• Creating opportunities for farmer groups to generate income through seed production and exchange.
• Enhancing food and nutrition security by ensuring communities can consistently produce diverse and nutritious crops.
Through training, technical support, and community-based seed multiplication initiatives, JAM is helping farmers become custodians of quality seed and champions of sustainable agriculture. Strengthening Impact Through Community Engagement

Yesterday, the CEO of Justice And Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project concluded a two-day field visit across our project communities to assess the progress and impact of our programs on the lives of the people we serve.
The visit covered all of JAM's key thematic areas, including Children and Youth Empowerment, Integrated Health, and Agroecological Agriculture and Climate Change Adaptation. Through interactions with beneficiaries, the CEO witnessed firsthand the positive changes taking place and gained valuable insights into the successes, challenges, and opportunities for continued growth.
Beyond monitoring program implementation, the visit provided a meaningful opportunity for beneficiaries to engage directly with the CEO, sharing their experiences, stories of transformation, and aspirations for the future. These conversations reinforce our commitment to community-led development and inspire us to continue working alongside communities to build healthier, more resilient, and sustainable livelihoods.

Across Homa Bay County, smallholder farmers are turning to a simple but powerful practice. Mulching to transform how they grow their food.
Through the Justice And Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project, farmers are being trained and supported to adopt this sustainable, climate-smart technology. And the results speak for themselves:
Healthier soil: mulch protects and enriches the earth beneath our feet
Water conservation: critical in a region where rainfall is often unpredictable
Increased crop yields: more food, more income, more stability
Lower production costs: smart farming that eases the burden on farmers

Promoting Sustainable Farming for Better Nutrition
JAM recently visited We Ginee Self-Help Group in Kojwach, Rachuonyo East, where we established an African Leafy Vegetables (ALV) demonstration plot at the farm of our contact farmer, Mama Lizer.
Following the practical session, group members committed to establishing similar ALV gardens in their own households, taking an important step toward improving household nutrition, food security, and the adoption of sustainable farming practices.

Meet Monica a true champion of sustainable farming
After receiving agroecology training at JAM, Monica transformed a challenging, rocky hillside into a thriving demonstration garden using double-dug beds and soil conservation techniques. Today, she harvests nutritious African Leafy Vegetables, proving that knowledge and determination can turn even the toughest land into a source of abundance.
With the support of her Mariwa Ber Women's Group, Monica has also overcome record-keeping challenges, showing the power of community in creating sustainable livelihoods.
Her story reminds us that when knowledge, resilience, and teamwork come together, small farms can achieve extraordinary results.

Empowering the Next Generation Through Junior Farmers School

Justice And Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project continues to nurture future agricultural champions through the Junior Farmers School Program implemented in schools across Homa Bay County.
The initiative is designed to equip learners with practical farming knowledge and skills that will not only enhance their understanding of agriculture but also empower them to contribute to food security and improved livelihoods within their families and communities.
Through hands-on learning experiences, students are exposed to sustainable farming practices, crop production techniques, environmental conservation, and the importance of agriculture as a source of income. The knowledge gained enables learners to apply these skills at home, helping households improve food production while creating opportunities for future financial stability.

Empowering Adolescents with Essential Life Skills!
Justice And Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project continues to invest in the future of young people through Life Skills Training sessions conducted in schools across Homa Bay County.
The training equips adolescents with practical knowledge and skills that help them make informed decisions, build self-confidence, develop healthy relationships, and navigate challenges they encounter in their daily lives. Key topics covered include self-awareness, communication skills, goal setting, peer pressure management, reproductive health, leadership, and responsible decision-making.

Yesterday, the team at Justice and Mercy (JAM) Community Integrated Project participated in an internal staff training held at the JAM premises, aimed at enhancing organizational effectiveness and sustainability.
The training focused on three key areas:
Finance Management: Strengthening financial accountability, stewardship, and effective resource utilization.
Resource Mobilization: Exploring innovative approaches to fundraising, partnership development, and sustainable resource acquisition to support community programs.
Organizational Context: Deepening staff understanding of JAM's vision, mission, values, strategic priorities, and the role each team member plays in achieving our shared goals.
Continuous learning and capacity building remain at the heart of our commitment to delivering impactful, accountable, and sustainable community development interventions. By equipping our staff with the necessary knowledge and skills, we strengthen our ability to serve communities effectively and create lasting positive change.
