Metis Metis works to transform education through local leadership and innovation.

This was 5 months ago.

Today, we're 9 months in, with over 8,000 educators reached and 4,500 active members in our teachers' community.

Because teachers can now handle their administrative tasks in significantly less time without compromising quality, they've been able to protect their wellbeing and with that time and energy freed up, their creativity and classroom problem-solving have genuinely flourished.
That's the cause-and-effect we set out to create, by pairing Amal Labs, an intelligent AI assistant with a human-centered design thinking approach to real classroom challenges.

What would you do differently if you had a teaching assistant that handled time management, produced quality professional documents, sparked contextualized ideas, and supported your wellbeing?

When we invest in girls, we transform entire communities.
Abdulkarim Taraja, Metis cohort 5 fellow is proving exactly that.
A massive shoutout to Abdulkarim Taraja of ECE Kenya for spearheading the , a transformative programme designed to reduce school dropouts, early marriages, and teenage pregnancies among girls in the Mount Elgon region.
Launched in 2024 across schools as a sustainability strategy, the project has reached over 1000 girls at risk of dropping out of school and continues to provide mentorship, reproductive health education, and life skills training to school-going girls who need it most.
Community transformation happens when we choose to invest in dignity, one girl at a time.

Glitter first heard about Amal Labs through her dad, a teacher already part of the InnovatED Amal community.
Now stepping into the classroom as a teacher in practice, she quickly faced a real challenge in navigating new learning areas under CBE while juggling the daily administrative workload that comes with teaching. It was unfamiliar territory, and like many early-career teachers, she leaned on observing her colleagues to find her footing. With Amal Labs, she began using the platform to ease her administrative load and confidently approach subjects that once felt new to her, like music.
Even at an early stage in her career, Glitter is now influencing educators who have been in the profession longer and encouraging them to embrace digital tools and making teaching more efficient, creative, and engaging.
Amal Labs is helping teachers unlock new levels of growth, through our human centered design thinking approach to classroom innovation, The Metis Way, empowering them to lead, adapt, and redefine what’s possible in the classroom.

East Africa is in a learning crisis and the numbers are staggering. 89% of African learners are in learning poverty. 9 out of 10 children in Sub-Saharan Africa cannot read and understand a simple text by age 10. This is just as much a leadership and innovation gap as it is a resource gap.
At Metis, we work alongside local leaders to drive systemic change through three targeted programmes built precisely at this intersection. Our 2025 Annual Report shows how that work is unfolding in real time. See what's possible when the right people lead the change.

We don't often find ourselves all in one room together, so recently after the Metis team and our star teachers came together to celebrate a key milestone, having 6,000+ teachers now using the Amal Labs platform, we had to make it count.

We took that time to reflect, appreciate how far we've come, and celebrate this success as a team and also seized the opportunity to made TikToks for the our new page. None of us had done this before. But everyone showed up with no holding back, put their best foot forward, and went for it together.

And in that, something became clear. When a team shows up the same way they do in their work, with trust, collaboration, and a belief in what they're building, they'll also trust each other enough to embarrass themselves on camera and somehow make it look good.

That moment said everything. The trust and collaboration that drives our work every day showed up right there on camera. People backing each other, building on each other's energy, refusing to be anything less than all in.

You’ve probably never imagined this…
A school where goats walk into the staffroom and mess up important documents, while teachers are busy in class or the school has emptied for the weekend.
Normally, you can always redo documents.
But what happens when a CSO shows up. unannounced and needs to verify your professional records on the spot?

Sounds wild, but for Shadrack Mala, a teacher in Samburu, it happens.

One day, while all the teachers were in class, goats got in and scattered files.
With no time to panic, Shadrack turned to Amal Labs, his AI assistant and co-teacher.
In under 3 minutes, his documents were ready.

The CSO? Beyond impressed.
Now, he uses Amal Labs to generate notes for his students and support his daily teaching and during the occasional emergency.

Amal is revolutionizing education, even in the most unexpected situations.

492 participants. Countless time zones. United by Impact.

Shoutout to Patrick Munguti and the Kenya Connect crew for mobilizing a movement that refuses to be contained by borders.
The KC5K Global Run, coordinated by Kenya Connect, took "community" to a whole new level. While some were chasing the sunrise in Wamunyu, others were logging miles in San Diego, Kansas, London and beyond.

Hongera sana Kenya Connect!

Getting material approval from Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development is a process, one built on evaluation, feedback, and continuous iteration.

On March 27th, Metis alumni came together for a virtual coffee-style conversation with KICD experts, unpacking what it really takes to navigate approval and curriculum alignment successfully. From aligning materials to the Kenyan education system to ensuring content is contextualized and tailored to specific learner groups, the session highlighted what truly matters.

The key? Clarity and focus. Developing from KICD curriculum designs, targeting a defined age group (early years, primary, junior, or senior school), and being intentional about your learner’s context, because a student in Parklands may not have the same needs as one in Kibera or Marsabit.

And perhaps what stuck most 😅, feedback.
It’s not always easy, especially when it’s on something you’ve poured your heart into. But being open, adaptable, and willing to refine your work is essential to making it through the process.
With insights from experts like Dominic Kioko, Mercy Wambui, and Faith Makena, it was a session grounded in practical guidance, honest reflections, and shared learning.

Good conversation, practical insights, and a reminder that the process works, when you work with it.

Welcome back, Roshni Walia!🎉

We’re excited to share that Roshni is stepping into a new volunteer role as Senior Leadership Advisor to our Executive Director, .gakwa

From contributing as a Metis board member to continuing this journey in a new capacity, this next chapter feels like a natural evolution.

We’ve built school around systems and structure… but are we designing it around children?

That’s what the Whole-Child Model asks us to rethink.

A -child approach recognizes that learning is shaped not just by what students know, but by how they feel, how safe they are, how their bodies are doing, and who they’re becoming. When a learner is anxious, hungry, disconnected, or unseen, it becomes harder to focus, regulate, and make meaning. And this focus is essential because learning and are influenced not only by how we process information in our minds but also by how we feel, physically and emotionally.

On 25th February, Metis and Transcend hosted a virtual conversation exploring what it truly takes to design holistic, -centred schools. Together, we unpacked how leaders can move beyond academics to intentionally support identity, lived experience, and growth.

Transcend is a leading school innovation organization that partners with school communities and districts to reimagine education through -based design. Since 2005, they’ve worked with hundreds of visionary schools and systems on whole-school redesign, workforce pathways, project-based learning, and social-emotional learning.

Metis and Transcend are partnering to support Metis alumni who currently lead or are building schools in moving from early success to sustained, whole-child impact at scale.
