A key part of the Teachers' EdTech Summit '26 was to hold space for participants to reflect on policy; particularly, two questions.

Because too often, teachers are the last consulted and the first affected, handed tools they didn't ask for, and reforms that stall the moment they enter a real classroom.

This summit aimed to reclaim teacher agency and power through policy dialogue and problem-solving, bringing together a rare mix of stakeholders: teachers, policymakers, government, and local innovators, in one room, breaking the silos. So we made space to hear directly from them.

This is what teachers had to say.
What would you want policy to prioritise first?

The Teachers' EdTech Summit 2026 was made possible by an incredible team of partners!

Ministry of Education - Kenya, Makini School - Cambridge and CBC Curriculum , Metis, Raspberry Pi Foundation & EdTech East Africa came together to equip 115 teachers to reclaim joy, dignity, and power in teaching.

Grateful for this collaboration!

What happens when you break the silos of a fragmented education ecosystem, and put policymakers, teachers, government, and local innovators in one room, around one theme?

You get 115 stakeholders convening, empowered to carry solutions back into their own contexts, adapt them, and lead change from where they stand.

The 'EdTechSummit2026 was built on exactly that; learning, community, and solution design. A day rewriting what teaching looks like, with , , and , in the age of AI.

Naftaly Muroki, our head of Programmes and Partnerships, opened with a session on designing for joy, dignity, and power, walking teachers through , our human-centered design thinking approach to turning real classroom challenges into actionable, context-aware solutions.

followed with Teaching Smarter with Technology, guiding teachers through prototyping well-crafted AI prompt that can generate a full teaching materials in minutes, without sacrificing quality.

Then Experience AI, from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, broke down how AI actually works, and how to teach and use it responsibly in the classroom.

We closed with a breakout on teacher wellbeing, naming the real challenges standing between teachers and thriving, and what teachers, as the leaders closest to the problem, already have to solve them.

More unfolded than three sessions can hold. STAY CLOSE.

Across East Africa, curriculum reforms, AI initiatives, and ed-tech investments all hinge on one thing: teachers. Yet too often, teachers are handed the policy instead of helping write it, and the result is predictable. Reforms that stall at the classroom door. Tools that solve problems no teacher actually has.

OECD research points to a fix: teacher agency!
When educators have the professional voice to shape curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment, not just implement them, outcomes improve, for teachers and learners alike.

Our work at Metis exists to change this narrative: holding an integral part as the ecosystem glue- strengthening relationships by creating spaces and providing tools where those closest to teaching help shape the future of education.

And this year, the Teachers Ed Tech Summit 2026, held in partnership with EdTech East Africa , Raspberry Pi Foundation and Makini Schools puts it into practice.

Over 5,000 teachers from our Community of Practice. Policymakers, education leaders, innovators, researchers, funders, in the same room, building together.

Where learners co-create the very solutions and systems meant to support them. Then they do not just benefit, but believe, own and become partners not passengers.

At the workshop, students shaped the conversations, challenged and asked hard questions and took part in designing solutions rooted in their own lived realities.

At Metis, we've long believed that education should see learners as whole human beings, not just scores.

Earlier this month, together with our partners at Transcend, we marked an important milestone in that commitment, bringing together learners, educators, policymakers, and partners to co-create what whole-child education can look like in Kenya.

We brought that aspiration into one room and we listened. We created space for honest conversations, shared learning, and co-creation.

While every context was different, our collective vision remained the same: education systems where every child is seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Here are a few voices from the convening that stayed with us.

77 young minds are now architects of Africa's next food systems.

That's the quiet headline behind Kenneth Monjero, aka Dr. Fun, winning the World Food Prize Foundation's Inspiring the Next Generation Award at the DialogueNEXT Africa summit. Global recognition for work that started with a simple bet: that agricultural innovation can be inclusive and scalable.

Under his coordination at the Science Centre and Youth Institute, those 77 innovators learnt about sustainable food systems and built the confidence to shape them.

And thanks to his relentless dedication, science, technology, and innovation are more than subjects to the youth. They're an adventure. Kenneth is the reason that spark exists
