Margret Kuku, a participant in MIDI’s Omom Self-Help Group in Kimuka, Kajiado West, has changed her life through her investments in the group’s Village Saving and Loaning Association (VSLA) program.
Margret built a chicken house and bought 30 chickens with a loan she took out of her group investment pot. She now collects their eggs and sells them along with her hens from time to time. Now, after paying off her loan, she keeps all the profits.
“I’m able to save and borrow money that I repay with low interest,” said Margret. “It helps me feel more secure, even during dry periods.”
In this severe drought and changing climate, chickens are a more reliable source of livestock compared to common animals like cow, goat, and sheep because they need little food and water, and do not migrate during droughts.
While Margret’s other animals have been struggling to find food, her chickens have been getting big and fat in preparation for the holidays. In the coming months, she plans to sell many of her chickens so others can celebrate Christmas and the New Year. 🎊
