Area of Focus

1. Shakenisho organization works at the grassroots level to help underprivileged children access quality education through ensuring smooth enrollment, retention and transition from one level of education to another. To achieve this, Shakenisho runs four education programs; Child support, mentorship and life skills program, improving learning environment program and community education programs.

2. Health
Shakenisho organization believes a health body is a home for health soul and development. We are committed in ensuring easily accessible and affordable quality health services to women, children and people living with disability. Shakenisho organization works hand in hand with Community Health Volunteers (CHP) in managing health related issues at the community level. Women and girls’ forums at the community levels and schools are also conducted to educate them on health-related matters.

3. Economic Empowerment
Economic empowerment program focuses on capacity building of women who are socially and economically disadvantaged. The critical failure in leadership, governance and management in most cases create gross poverty and high unemployment rates and especially among women and persons with disability. Shakenisho organization empowers women and persons with disability to improve their livelihoods through income generating skills and business startups. Economic empowerment program is designed to showcase the women’s abilities which are hardly noticed in Maa community due to the cultural beliefs

4. Child’s Rights
Shakenisho organization is in front line advocating for the rights of women and children especially girls and children living with disability who are the most vulnerable groups of people. Women, girls and children living with disability rights have been violated and therefore in partnership with government and other CSOs, the Organization works to ensure access to quality health and education, elimination of Gender Based Violence (GBV), Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM), child marriages, teenage pregnancies, and disability discrimination in both public and private sectors.

5. Disability Inclusion
Strategic inclusion of persons with special needs is one of our main areas of focus to ensure no person with disability in the community is left out. We ensure children with disability have access to quality education through facilitating their school enrollment, retention and their transition to secondary and colleges/universities. Adult Men and women with disabilities are enrolled on our economic empowerment program where they are trained on entrepreneurship skills and supported with startup capitals to start small business.

6. Environmental Conservation
A major threat to the vegetation cover is the destruction caused by human activities including grazing, charcoal burning, extraction of wood fuel and cutting down of trees without replacement resulting in adverse ecological effects. At Shakenisho organization, we are guided by Kenya Vision 2030 which aims to have a nation living in a clean, secure and sustainable environment. We strongly encourage community members to participate in environmental conservation (e.g., by planting trees) to increase afforestation. We mobilize and sensitize community on importance of tree planting and management for food security, nutrition and environmental conservation which is in line with Kenya Vision 2030. We equip community members with skills on green energy and other fuel saving modes to avoid deforestation and protect water catchment areas by encouraging afforestation.
