SKIN SCREENING ON PERSONS WITH ALBINISM
A dermatological screening exercise was conducted among individuals with albinism at Narok Referral Hospital and Longisa Referral Hospital to assess skin health and identify any existing conditions. The findings indicated that the majority of participants had normal skin examination results. However, a few cases of concern were identified, including actinic cheilitis and a fungal infection diagnosed as tinea faciei. Appropriate management was provided for these conditions, including the use of sunscreen lip balm for lip protection and antifungal treatment through both oral and topical medication. All participants were educated on the importance of consistent sunscreen use and maintaining proper skin care routines to prevent sun-related damage.
The screening further revealed a significant gap in access to essential protective products, particularly sunscreen and lip balm. Most participants rely on government support, which does not consistently meet their skin care needs. This lack of adequate protection exposes them to increased risks of dry skin conditions and harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation effects, including long-term skin damage. There is a pressing need for improved access to affordable or subsidized skin care products, as well as continued awareness initiatives to promote preventive care among individuals with albinism in these facilities.
