Manyaku Mashilo | Segera Artist in Residence | is a Cape Town-based painter whose work asks a question that has no easy answer: how will we survive here, in the now, the tomorrow, the after?
Her figurative paintings are celestial cartographies. Dreamlike figures — fluid, genderless, uncontained — move through abstracted landscapes drawn from family photographs, ancestral memory, African spirituality, and the deep pull of what is still yet to come. Her canvases blend Blues, African gospel, and free jazz into line work that spirals like fingerprints, like ripples, like undiscovered stars.
While she was creating at Segera, we caught up with , Kenyan filmmaker denismvvangi about her inspirations and reflections on the conservancy, a landscape that holds its own kind of ancient knowledge.
Her work forms part of the Zeitz Collection, which lives throughout Segera, in the villas, the gardens, and the conservancy itself.
