Oceans are home to an extraordinary diversity of life, and coral reefs are among their most vital ecosystems.

These underwater ecosystems support an estimated 25% of all marine species, providing critical habitats, food sources and protection for coastlines and coastal communities.

Protecting and restoring coral reefs is essential to maintaining marine biodiversity and achieving the for life below water:

Pollution is everywhere. From toxic chemicals and textile waste to vehicle emissions and plastic pollution, this crisis claims millions of lives each year. For example, microplastics infiltrate rivers, food systems, and our bodies, while harmful chemicals contaminate soils and waterways. Nearly everyone on Earth breathes unsafe air.

That's why countries are stepping up efforts to transition away from unnecessary single-use plastics, phase out toxic substances, green transport systems, make fashion more sustainable, and strengthen accountability for producers.

UNEP is supporting these efforts with science, policy advice, and partnerships across sectors, from mining to agriculture to energy.

Humanity’s survival depends on a healthy ocean.

As the planet’s blue lungs, our ocean is essential for all life on Earth. It’s a major source of food and medicine, it regulates our climate, and is a crucial part of the water cycle, supporting millions of livelihoods worldwide.

Protecting the ocean isn’t just about saving marine life; it’s about safeguarding our future.

Take action to before its health reaches a breaking point. https://www.unep.org/topics/ocean-seas-and-coasts

Kenya must not roll back clean air gains.
Raising sulphur limits in fuel from 10ppm to 50ppm reverses progress under KEBS and EAC standards (KS EAS 158 & 177), exposing communities to more pollution, disease, and environmental harm.
Clean air is a right, not a compromise.
We call on the Government to uphold ultra-low sulphur fuel standards and protect public health.
