Farming Systems Kenya

Farming Systems Kenya Vision:
A vibrant, profitable and sustainable farming community in Kenya. We therefore undertake agribusiness enterprise incubation.

Our main agenda is to enhance food security through the development of agriculture in Kenya and beyond. The main focus has been the smallholder farmers who constitute 80% of Kenya’s farming community. We achieve this by improving their crops and livestock productivity, enhancing income and food security. We introduce appropriate technologies, and help farmers cut down production costs; we provide

agribusiness linkages as well as creating community structures that act as platforms for agricultural policy influencing. FSK has realized that to help smallholder farmers start a new enterprise or expand an existing enterprise credit is of great essence. FSK further undertakes core activities in donkey welfare and water, sanitation and hygiene programmes. These interventions mainly target ASAL areas where the donkey is a critical animal. We welcome you to take a journey through our highlights. Please do not forget to give your response.

RECAP:

What a meaningful day at Mulot Comprehensive School as Farming Sytems Kenya in collaboration with The Brooke East Africa and the County Government of Bomet joined the community to commemorate World Donkey Day.

Under the spirit of protecting and preserving the African donkey, we celebrated the important role donkeys play in supporting families, livelihoods, agriculture, transport and market access across our communities.

We are sincerely grateful to the County Government of Bomet for the continued partnership and support in advancing donkey welfare and strengthening the livelihoods of donkey-owning communities.

The day featured a tree planting exercise, a community procession, and an animal health outreach where over 400 donkeys were dewormed and vaccinated against rabies.

In Kapicha, progress is far more than a concept. It is a visible transformation unfolding on the ground. A team from Farming Systems Kenya, alongside a representative from the County Government of Baringo recently conducted a monitoring visit at the Kapicha Campsite and Ecotourism Centre to witness this remarkable momentum firsthand.

Key achievements:
βœ… Establishment of robust grass cover for erosion control and the construction of extensive terraces to safeguard the landscape.
βœ…Infrastructure Upgrades: Installation of a fully equipped modern kitchen, camping tents and upgraded sanitation facilities.
βœ…Reliable solar power supply.
βœ…Wi-Fi connectivity to enhance the visitor experience and streamline site operations.
βœ…Official certification of local tour guides, ensuring high standards of service.

With thousands reached through community outreach and significant land restoration complete, the center is seeing a steady rise in both visitor numbers and revenue. Kapicha stands as a premier model for sustainable ecotourism, proving that environmental conservation and community empowerment can thrive together to create a lasting, positive impact.

The Farming Systems Kenya team recently stepped away from their day-to-day work to reconnect and recharge during a two-day team building at Angani Resort in Subukia, Nakuru County.

Staff from across all our offices came together, creating space to build stronger relationships and share experiences beyond the workplace.

The retreat blended fun, teamwork, and meaningful conversations. Alongside the laughter and group activities, we took time to reflect and plan ahead, shaping our priorities for 2026 and ensuring our work continues to support farming communities in practical and lasting ways.

For years, donkeys in Njebi and Limunga, Marmanet Ward in Laikipia County silently endured the burden of poorly fitted harnesses, compromising both their well-being and productivity.

With support from The Brooke East Africa, Farming Systems Kenya stepped in to address this challenge by conducting a harness training to empower farmers with skills to create welfare-friendly harnesses using locally available materials, ensuring both comfort for the animals and improved efficiency in their work.

This initiative is now helping to restore the health and strength of these hardworking donkeys, while giving farmers the tools to work more effectively and sustainably.
