If you don't know your herd's actual milk yield numbers, you are making breeding decisions blind — and your competitors with data are gaining ground every season.

The Dairy Recording Service of Kenya (DRSK) changes that. Through monthly milk testing, DRSK builds a verified performance record for every cow in your herd. Over time, you see clearly which animals are genuinely productive and which are consuming feed without delivering returns. That clarity drives smarter bull selection, faster genetic improvement, and measurable growth in herd output — without necessarily adding more animals.

These aren't just internal farm records. DRSK-issued herd averages and lactation data are recognized documentation that strengthens your position when selling breeding stock or accessing markets where performance proof matters.
Your herd's data is your competitive edge.

The Boer Goat can gain up to 200 grams per day — making it the fastest-growing meat goat breed available to Kenyan farmers today.

Originally developed in South Africa for superior meat production, the Boer Goat has earned its place as one of Kenya's most commercially valuable breeds. A mature buck reaches 110–135kg, commands premium slaughter prices, and cross-breeds exceptionally well with local breeds like the Galla — producing offspring built for Kenya's semi-arid conditions without sacrificing growth rate. The breed's feed conversion efficiency means more meat from less input, a real advantage when input costs keep rising.

Here is what separates breeders who capture that premium from those who don't: a Kenya Stud Book pedigree certificate. Without registered bloodlines, serious buyers — exporters, commercial farms, elite breeders — have no way to verify your animal's genetic quality. That uncertainty costs you at the negotiating table every single time.

Two cows. Same breed. Same farm. Same feed. One produces 20 litres a day — the other produces 9. The question is: do you know which is which?

Without milk performance records, most dairy farmers are making their most critical breeding decisions — which cow to keep, which bull to use, which daughters to retain — based on assumptions. That is an expensive way to run a dairy enterprise.

The Dairy Recording Service of Kenya (DRSK) gives you the data to stop guessing. Through systematic milk yield tracking, lactation length records, and certified herd averages, DRSK transforms your dairy herd from a collection of animals into a documented, measurable genetic asset.

Enrolled farmers don't just know which cow produces more — they can prove it to buyers, shows, and financing institutions.

Your herd is generating valuable data every single milking. DRSK helps you capture and use it.

Your best animals are worth more than you're currently being paid for them.

When a buyer cannot verify your animal's genetics, pedigree, or bloodline, they default to the general market price — regardless of how much you've invested in breed selection, feeding, and management. That price gap between a verified pedigree animal and an unregistered one can be tens of thousands of shillings per head.

Kenya Stud Book (KSB) is Kenya's only official livestock pedigree registry, and it exists precisely to close that gap. KSB issues pedigree certificates for cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and camels — giving your breeding stock a documented identity that commands respect at the farm gate, in the show ring, and in premium commercial channels.

Serious breeders don't leave their genetics undocumented.
They register, certify, and sell at the prices their animals deserve.

Mucemi Farm.

They tasted Hampshire Down mutton once — and made a decision that changed everything.

Fifteen years ago, Mwangi and Njeri Muchemi of Mucemi Farm in Dundori, Nyandarua, ate meat unlike anything they had ever had. When they came home, they began replacing their entire Merino flock with the Hampshire Down — a breed so premium it has been dubbed the Wagyu of sheep. In Australia, lamb cutlets from this breed have sold for over Ksh 12,000 per kilogram.

Building that flock was not without cost. In 2015, they imported 15 foundation animals from South Africa at roughly Ksh 150,000 each. Ten died during acclimatisation. Rather than retreat, the Muchemi family doubled down, refined their management, and today run one of Kenya's leading Hampshire Down operations — over 300 breeding animals on 20 acres of Nyandarua highlands.

What makes a herd like Mucemi's commercially credible? Documented bloodlines. Every registered animal tells a verified genetic story — one that commands premium prices, protects against inbreeding, and opens show and export channels. That documentation lives with Kenya Stud Book (KSB).

You feed every cow in your herd equally. But they are not all producing equally — and not knowing which one is costing you real money every single month.

The Dairy Recording Service of Kenya (DRSK) exists to close that gap. Through monthly milk recording, lactation certification, and full herd performance reports, DRSK gives dairy breeders the exact data they need to make decisions that improve profitability — not just hope they do.

Enrolled breeders use DRSK data to identify their strongest genetic performers, select better bulls for the next season, and remove underperforming animals before they drain feed budgets. The result isn't just more milk. It's a smarter, more efficient herd that improves with every lactation cycle.

Kenya's leading dairy farms don't guess. They record. And the numbers guide every decision.

A registered animal and an unregistered animal can walk into the same market on the same day — and leave with completely different prices. The difference isn't the breed. It's the paperwork.

Pedigree registration through the Kenya Stud Book (KSB) transforms your livestock from a commodity into a documented genetic asset. Buyers — especially exporters, commercial farms, and AI service providers — pay significantly more for animals whose lineage, breed standard, and identity are on official record.

KSB is Kenya's only national livestock registration body, meaning your certificate is recognized at every market, show ring, and export checkpoint in the country. We register cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and camels — and every certificate protects your bloodlines against inbreeding while opening doors to markets that demand proof of breed.

Your herd has worked hard to get where it is. Make sure the market sees its full value.

Mt. Kenya Branch Show

Five days from now, every serious breeder in Mt. Kenya will be at Nanyuki Showground. Will your animals be worth looking at — or just worth looking past?

The ASK Mt. Kenya Branch Show runs from 20th to 23rd May at Nanyuki Showground, and it is one of the most important livestock events in the region. But here is what most breeders don't talk about: the animals that attract serious buyers at these shows are not just well-fed. They are documented.

A Kenya Stud Book (KSB) pedigree certificate tells every judge, buyer, and fellow breeder in that ring exactly what your animal is, where it came from, and what it's worth. Without that certificate, you are showing a good animal. With it, you are showing a verified, premium asset.
If you haven't registered your herd yet, now is the time. Don't walk into Nanyuki unprepared.

Visit www.klba.or.ke today and get your registration sorted before show day.

❓ Q&A TUESDAY'S
"My cows are producing milk, but I feel like they should be giving more. What am I missing?"

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and it's the right one to ask.

Here's the honest answer: If you're not recording, you're guessing. And guessing costs you money every single day.

🔍 What does Milk Recording tell you?
Milk Recording under the Dairy Recording Service of Kenya (DRSK) gives you accurate, verified data on how much milk each of your cows is producing — per lactation, per season, over time. It tells you which animals are performing, which are underperforming, and which ones should be culled or bred differently.
Without this data, you cannot make informed decisions about feeding, breeding, or herd management. You are flying blind.

🧪 What about Milk Quality?
Production numbers alone are not enough. The Livestock Recording Centre (LRC), which partners with DRSK, offers Milk Analysis services that assess fat content, protein levels, somatic cell count, and other quality indicators. Poor milk quality means rejected consignments, lower prices, and undetected health issues in your herd.

📋 And Livestock Registration?
Every high-performing dairy animal should be registered with the Kenya Stud Book (KSB). Registration is not just paperwork — it's proof of your animal's identity, lineage, and performance history. It protects your investment, increases the value of your breeding stock, and makes your herd credible to buyers, AI service providers, and lenders.
