🌍 Happy World Environment Day!

Today, we celebrate the role we all play in protecting the environment and building resilient communities. At Olturoto, children are learning that caring for the environment is also about caring for families, livelihoods, and the future.

As part of the day, children, teachers, caregivers, and community members came together for a community clean-up activity, united by a simple message: Together for a cleaner and healthier environment. 🌱

Because when the climate changes, childhood changes too. 💚🌍

🌍When we talk about climate change, we often think about droughts, floods, and rising temperatures.

But for families in Kajiado, climate change is also about children missing school, livelihoods under pressure, and the everyday challenges of keeping families safe and stable.

In this thought leadership piece, our General Manager, Victoria Kamau, explores why climate resilience and child protection are deeply connected and why strengthening families must be part of the climate conversation.

By Victoria Kamau Heri , General Manager, Kickstart Kids International In Kajiado County of Kenya, climate change is no longer a future threat. It is already shaping the daily realities of children and families.

🌍 Climate change is often discussed by adults, but children notice its impact too.

Through their Climate Diaries, children in our After-School Programme shared what they see happening around them:

🌧️ When it rains: "Floods come, houses are damaged, and plants begin to grow."
💧 When there is no water: "Livestock die, plants dry up, and drought affects families."
🌱 How families care for the environment: "We plant trees, protect nature, and build water retention structures."
🤝 What adults should know: "Work together, stop cutting trees, and keep our environment clean."

Today, we invite you to hear directly from them because when children speak about their world, we should listen. 💚

When the weather changes, childhood changes too.

For children and families in Olturoto, climate change is not a distant conversation. It affects access to food, water, livelihoods, education, and everyday family life.

This World Environment Day, we're sharing the voices of children and caregivers as they reflect on climate, resilience, and the world around them.

Follow along this week as we share their voices, experiences, and hopes for the future. 💚

Every child has a story worth telling.✨

During our recent My World, My Story session, children explored storytelling through drawing, writing, poetry, and imagination. Learning that their voice matters and that stories can be shared in many different ways.

From dreams for the future to moments of courage and kindness, the children expressed themselves with confidence, creativity, and joy in a safe and supportive space.💚

Today, we celebrate the strength, care, and belonging that families provide to children every day.

At OCV, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a safe and loving family. That is why our work focuses on strengthening families, supporting caregivers, and building communities where children can thrive - not apart from families, but within them. 💚

Because when families are supported, children are protected, hopeful, and given the best chance to flourish.

🌸 “My mother is my hero.”
💬 “My mother is one in a million.”
💬 “My mother is my everything.”

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the mothers and caregivers who create safety, love, and belonging for children every single day.

Through the voices of children, we are reminded that motherhood is more than care—it is protection, stability, encouragement, and hope. 💚

At Kickstart, we believe that when mothers and caregivers are supported, children thrive and families stay together.

💬 “My daughter used to struggle to speak up and lacked confidence around people. Since joining the programme, she has become more confident, welcoming, and expressive at home. As a mother, seeing that growth brings me so much pride and joy.”

This Mother’s Day, we recognise the strength it takes and the support that makes it possible.

Strong Mothers. Strong Families. 💚

“Thanks mum for protecting me. I Love You!”

What does safety mean to a child?

Often, it begins with a mother or caregiver - someone who shows up, protects, and provides a sense of belonging.
