Yeeeeeeiy the world was painted 180 because of YMCA, we thank God 🙏🎊💃

Celebrating 180 Years of Community and Service. YMCA Nakuru honoured Founder's Day through the leadership of Sir George William by planting 180 trees , each tree signifies an impact YMCA made through the years, and also shared a cake to commemorate the day.

On this momentous occasion, we celebrate the 180th anniversary of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Founded on June 6, 1844, the YMCA has consistently been a beacon of hope, community, and development across the globe. For nearly two centuries, we have remained committed to our mission of fostering a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

As we reflect on our rich history, we honor the countless individuals who have contributed to our legacy. From the volunteers and staff to the members and supporters, your dedication has been the cornerstone of our success. Together, we have created a safer, healthier, and more inclusive world.

As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to serve and uplift our communities. Here's to 180 years of making a difference and to many more years of impact, growth, and positive change.

Happy 180th Anniversary, YMCA!

Did you know the 1950s and 1960s were transformative as many African nations gained independence. During this period, the YMCA promoted leadership training and community development, playing a vital role in the continent’s progress. By 1961, the YMCA had established new national councils in Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), focusing on local leadership training. This rapid expansion showcased the movement's commitment to developing African leaders. World YMCA

George Williams was born in Somerset, England, on 11 October 1821. In 1836 he moved to London to work as an apprentice to a Draper, and by 1841 was himself working as a Draper. He stayed in the accommodation provided by the firm in the same building, and became one of the 150,000 young men who had flooded into the city of London.

On 6th June 1844, George Williams, together with ten Christian young men, established the YMCA. “Our object is the improvement of the spiritual condition of the young men engaged in houses of business, by the formation of Bible classes, family and social prayer meetings, mutual improvement societies, or any other spiritual agency.”

Williams was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1894, and after his death was commemorated with a stained-glass window in the nave of Westminster Abbey. Sir George Williams is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral.
