Celebrating Ann Kariuki, Teacher at Kigogo School

Ann Kariuki teaches at Kigogo School, one of the project schools supported by SUED. She champions SUED values and programmes in the school and beyond.

Ann reflects on her journey as a teacher.

Passion, love, and joy. These three words have guided Ann since the day she chose teaching career.

"During my teenage years, I discovered that I wanted to create change, to be part of the change I wished to see in the world. I wanted my life to touch others in a way that would continue through generations. And as I thought about the career I wanted to pursue, teaching came to mind. Children are our today and our future. Caring for them means caring for who we are today and for the future we are building. I believe that educating the younger generation equips humanity with the values, knowledge, and skills we need not only to survive, but to live and thrive together.

I love children. I love how they greet me in the morning and how they say goodbye on their way home. I love their joy as they play, their excitement when they discover something new, and the way they care for one another without being limited by race, tribe, or social status. In teaching them, I have realized that I am also learning from them. They teach me how to be human, to care, to live, to laugh, to learn, to fall, and to rise again.

Education has the power to transform the lives of children and, in turn, shape our collective future. I am proud to play a small part in this incredible journey."

Meet Caren Jerono Kiptoo, SUED Volunteer

Caren Jerono Kiptoo is a Communication and Public Relations graduate with a passion for social impact, education and environmental sustainability.

She loves using media to put societal challenges in the spotlight, tell the stories behind them and help bring them to people’s attention. For Caren, communication is a way of helping people understand issues that affect everyday life and encouraging meaningful conversations around them.

Her interests include campaign management, social media engagement, content creation, photography, media relations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). She enjoys creating meaningful content and using her skills to support initiatives that make a difference.

As a SUED volunteer, Caren uses her communication skills to amplify community voices and share the work happening on the ground with a wider audience.

Climate change is putting increasing pressure on our environment, while some tree species are becoming endangered.

SUED is supporting schools to plant fruit trees alongside endangered and indigenous tree species. The aim goes beyond making school compounds greener. It is about giving learners the opportunity to plant, care for and understand the importance of trees.

When learners plant and care for trees, they get to see the importance of caring for their environment in a practical way.

SUED has already supported tree planting across schools in Gilgil, and we hope to reach more schools with this work. With continued support from our partners and supporters, we can keep growing these efforts and give more learners the opportunity to take part in caring for their environment.

Clean water remains a privilege for many communities in Africa, despite being a basic necessity of everyday life.

During our engagement with communities, we encountered women walking long distances to fetch water for their families, for cooking and cleaning, and for taking care of their animals. These long journeys take time and energy, adding to the responsibilities they already carry.

SUED is working towards easing this burden by providing water tanks that help families collect and store rainwater from rooftops, bringing water closer to home.

Having water closer to home can save time and energy, giving women more time for their families and other daily responsibilities. We are grateful to our donors and supporters whose generosity and continued support make this work possible.

Yesterday, SUED delivered water tanks to Ndogo Secondary School in Gilgil, an arid area where water remains a major challenge for both people and animals.

The community is affected by severe drought, forcing them to rely on gaseous underground water that is fluoride concentrated and not fit for human consumption due to its high mineral content. The tanks will support the collection of rainwater during the short rains, providing safer water for drinking and daily use. For girls, access to water will also support menstrual hygiene in an area where water is a scarce commodity.

The tanks will also support the growth and sustainability of the fruit trees SUED has planted at the school.

With continued support, SUED can reach more schools and communities facing similar challenges.

Classroom desks are an essential part of a comfortable learning environment. Having enough desks helps reduce congestion and gives learners adequate space to work with comfort and dignity.

Every child deserves a safe and comfortable place to learn.

SUED is working towards improving learning conditions for children and supporting environments where they can focus and make the most of their education.

A book can be much more than something a child reads. It can be a source of curiosity, imagination and discovery. Through books, children build language and reading skills, learn to understand feelings, develop empathy, and begin to think about how they treat others. A good book can leave a child with a new idea, a question, or a different way of looking at the world.

This is one of the reasons books matter to us at SUED. We want children to have opportunities to read beyond the school curriculum, to discover books that broaden their minds, encourage imagination, and expose them to values such as honesty, kindness, courage, respect and responsibility.

A book does not always have to tell a child what to think. Sometimes, it simply gives them something to think about. That is the beauty of a book.

A recent visit to Kenya by the SUED Netherlands team highlighted how something small can make a big difference. ❤️

At many schools in the Gilgil region, there simply aren’t enough desks and benches. As a result, some children have to sit on the floor during lessons.

Every child deserves a proper place to learn, right?

That’s why SUED Netherlands, together with SUED Kenya, wants to support the production of new school desks and tables. With your contribution, we can help ensure that more children will soon have a proper place to sit and learn.

During an earlier visit to Gilgil Highway Comprehensive School, Monique a member of the SUED team, noticed that several children had no place to sit during lessons. She pledged to help address the shortage.

Today, that commitment was made possible by Monique and her friends as the Sued team delivered desks to the school, providing a comfortable learning environment.

A heartfelt appreciation to Monique and her friends for helping turn this need into meaningful action.
