A book can be much more than something a child reads. It can be a source of curiosity, imagination and discovery. Through books, children build language and reading skills, learn to understand feelings, develop empathy, and begin to think about how they treat others. A good book can leave a child with a new idea, a question, or a different way of looking at the world.

This is one of the reasons books matter to us at SUED. We want children to have opportunities to read beyond the school curriculum, to discover books that broaden their minds, encourage imagination, and expose them to values such as honesty, kindness, courage, respect and responsibility.

A book does not always have to tell a child what to think. Sometimes, it simply gives them something to think about. That is the beauty of a book.

A recent visit to Kenya by the SUED Netherlands team highlighted how something small can make a big difference. ❤️

At many schools in the Gilgil region, there simply aren’t enough desks and benches. As a result, some children have to sit on the floor during lessons.

Every child deserves a proper place to learn, right?

That’s why SUED Netherlands, together with SUED Kenya, wants to support the production of new school desks and tables. With your contribution, we can help ensure that more children will soon have a proper place to sit and learn.

During an earlier visit to Gilgil Highway Comprehensive School, Monique a member of the SUED team, noticed that several children had no place to sit during lessons. She pledged to help address the shortage.

Today, that commitment was made possible by Monique and her friends as the Sued team delivered desks to the school, providing a comfortable learning environment.

As the SUED Netherlands team's visit drew to a close, SUED team members Bert, Ron, Moses and Jasper took on the challenge of hiking Mount Longonot National Park. The climb to the crater rim tested their endurance, but the breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha and the surrounding landscape made every step worthwhile. The experience reflected resilience, teamwork and the joy of exploring Kenya together.

The visit ended with a farewell lunch hosted by the SUED Kenya team, bringing everyone together to celebrate ten days of working alongside schools, communities and partners. It was a chance to look back on the experiences shared, the partnerships strengthened and the impact created throughout the visit.

Monique was recognised for the inspiring guest lessons she delivered in the schools, while Bert was appreciated for documenting the journey through photography and communication. Both were presented with tokens of appreciation in recognition of their contribution.

With the celebrations concluded, Moses accompanied the SUED Netherlands team to Nairobi ahead of their journey home. The drive offered one final opportunity to reflect on the schools visited, the communities engaged and the partnerships strengthened over the course of the ten-day visit.

The visit may have come to an end, but the connections built, the knowledge shared and the experiences gained over the past ten days will continue to strengthen the partnership between SUED Kenya and SUED Netherlands as they work together to create opportunities for children and communities.

Following Bert's well-deserved recognition, the SUED team travelled to Crescent Island, a beautiful nature reserve on the shores of Lake Naivasha.

The journey began with a peaceful boat ride across the lake, where the team spotted pods of hippos resting in the water while a variety of bird species soared overhead, creating a truly memorable experience.

On the island, the team enjoyed a walking safari among freely roaming zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, impalas, gazelles and waterbucks. Walking alongside these animals in their natural habitat offered a unique opportunity to experience Kenya's extraordinary wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

After a week of engaging with schools, communities and partners, the visit to Crescent Island offered a moment to reflect on the experiences shared, the relationships strengthened and the remarkable landscapes that form part of Kenya's rich natural heritage.

Some of the most valuable lessons in development come from seeing what others are already doing well. Kivulini Primary School is one such example.

Although the school is not part of SUED's support programme, its thriving fruit orchard has become a model of sustainable school agriculture. Supported by a reliable water supply, it creates practical learning opportunities for learners while benefiting the wider community.

Our team exchanged ideas with the school's leadership on irrigation, fruit cultivation, and ways similar approaches could strengthen school gardens in other communities. The visit continued with a warm welcome at a traditional Maasai Manyatta, where meaningful conversations reminded us that, despite our different cultures, communities often share the same hopes for their children and their future.

As the visit came to a close, we also recognised Bert for his outstanding contribution to documenting the journey. His photographs continue to capture the people, partnerships, and impact behind SUED's work, helping others experience the stories that inspire our mission.

Among the memorable moments during SUED's visit to Ndogo Secondary School was catching up with Joyce, one of the learners supported through SUED's Family Enterprise Funding Model.

Joyce came over to greet the team carrying a diary she had received from Ivo during SUED's January visit. She had been encouraged to document her journey, experiences, dreams and milestones, and she was eager to share what she had written.

Among its pages was an entry about her visit to the Agricultural Business Expo in Nakuru, an educational opportunity made possible through SUED's support. As the team read through her reflections, it was evident how much the experience had shaped her perspective and strengthened her aspirations.

Accompanied by one of her teachers, Joyce then walked with the team to her family home, where her mother warmly welcomed the unexpected visit. The conversation centred on Joyce's educational journey, the progress she has made over the past two years and her dream of becoming a primary school teacher.

Through SUED's Family Enterprise Funding Model, Joyce has remained in school while her family has received support with essential household needs, allowing her to focus on her education. Now preparing for her final examinations at Ndogo Secondary School, Joyce hopes to continue her studies at a teacher training college. Before leaving, the team assured Joyce and her mother that her aspirations would be presented to the SUED Boards in Kenya and the Netherlands as future support is considered.

Following several days of school visits and community engagement, the SUED team visited Hell's Gate National Park, cycling alongside zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, gazelles and warthogs before hiking through the spectacular Hell's Gate Gorge. The visit offered a chance to experience one of Kenya's most remarkable natural landscapes before continuing to Ndogo Secondary School.

The day began with a tree-planting exercise led by Moses, SUED Kenya's Programme Coordinator. Together with learners, teachers and members of the SUED team, fruit tree saplings were planted across the school compound. Jasper demonstrated the correct planting techniques, ensuring every tree was given the best possible start.

A particularly meaningful moment came when the team revisited a fruit tree planted during an earlier visit. Once a small sapling, it had grown into a healthy young tree, reflecting the impact that grows through care, patience and partnership.

Learners were also recognized through the Reading Book Award Programme for their academic effort and the values they demonstrate every day. Two outstanding learners received SUED T-shirts in recognition of their exemplary character.

The excitement continued as the school received its first-ever real football. After years of playing with a handmade ball crafted from cloth, learners celebrated as a friendly juggling challenge crowned the recipient of a football that will be enjoyed by the entire school community.

The visit concluded with discussions on the school's future priorities, including access to computers, solar-powered electricity and improved water storage. These conversations continue to guide SUED's commitment to supporting sustainable, community-led solutions that create lasting opportunities for learners.
