“𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.”

It sounds simple. The evidence is not.

FAO reports that the share of working youth engaged in agrifood systems fell from 54% 𝐢𝐧 2005 𝐭𝐨 44% 𝐢𝐧 2021, while also pointing to structural barriers including access to land, finance, technology, markets and decision-making.

And conversations in Kenya point to a similar tension: there are ideas, enterprises and opportunities, but moving them forward can depend on what exists around them, from infrastructure and standards to finance, commercialisation and markets.

So perhaps “interest” is too easy an explanation.

The more useful question may be:

Three days. One Mbogi. So many conversations.

We were proud to be part of the Kenya Youth in Agrifood Systems Summit 2026, a space that brought together young people and stakeholders to talk, challenge, learn and imagine what better agrifood systems can look like.

From youth leadership and access to resources to markets, innovation, policy, agroecology, regenerative farming and sustainable food systems, there was a lot to unpack.

As an environmental conservation organisation, the conversations around agroecology and regenerative approaches connected strongly with our work — but so did the bigger conversation around young people having a meaningful role in shaping the future of our food systems.

And Day 3 took the learning from the room into the field, giving us a chance to see some of these approaches in practice.
