Our new volunteer, sam_gillam (from Australia), has now been with us for 6 weeks. Some of the things she’s been up to during that time include training an unreleasable Spotted Eagle Owl, assisting our avian vet Dr. Juliet in the clinic, educating kids at the centre and local schools, helping tag two vultures for release, assembling a Flamingo skeleton, trips on the lake and into Hell’s Gate National Park, and some fun fieldwork trapping and tagging Augur Buzzards around Lake Naivasha.

Next week we’re doing African Fish Eagle counts on the lake, and heading to Soysambu to visit our partners at the Soysambu Raptor Centre to look for some lions!

If you’re interested in volunteering with us, head over to our website to find out more.

International Vulture Awareness Day is today, where we celebrate and appreciate our Vultures and what they do for us.

It’s been a busy time here at The Kenya Bird of Prey Trust, and the Naivasha Raptor Centre:

- We’ve recently had an incredible donation of 3000 children’s books on Vultures and their conservation, which we are using country-wide in various educational programs.

- Today we’ve been prepping two Rüppell’s Vultures for release! The two birds are very young juveniles, that fledged prematurely from the Kwenia Cliffs in southern Kenya (a vulture stronghold, and managed by the Kwenia Vulture Sanctuary Trust). There’s always a few early ‘plungers’ from cliff nest colonies, but these two were saved and transported to the NRC by the team at Kwenia. They’ve been at the centre for a months, putting on weight and getting stronger. Today, we fitted them with GPS transmitters and permanent leg rings, so we can track them over the next few years. We wish them well, and we’ll post photos and videos of their release.

Both birds will be released in the Mara tomorrow, with plenty of Wildebeest around (food), to give them the best chance of surviving and thriving back in the wild.

We extend a BIG thank you to Ran Levy-Yamamori, an award-winning documentary film maker and conservation educator, and to the Executive Director of AWI (the Animal Welfare Institute) Susan Millward, for their kind donation of 3000 copies of ‘Bahati, Guardian of the Mara’ - an excellently written and illustrated children’s book on Vultures and their conservation.

‘Bahati’ is already proving invaluable to our education programs as our full time conservation educator Willis has been donation copies of this book (along with the Rubbish Bin, the first book in the series focusing on Owls), to local schools to teach young Kenyans about the importance of Raptors and their conservation.
