As in other areas of Kenya, Naivasha struggles with extreme poverty, disease and crime. Therese Development Centre was built in 2011, Naivasha, Kenya for sexually and physically abused children. It is sponsored by Canadian Hearts and Hands: A mission without borders (http://www.canadianheartsandhands.ca/). It is a not-for-profit charity organisation with the main slogan of "Serving life with love
and justice"
The Centre is proudly serving the whole of Kenya, as it is the only Centre around the country that provides all the services and a complete program for abused children. A total of 62 children are admitted free of charge for a defined rehabilitation period of two years. Of both genders, their ages vary from 4 to 16 years old. Therese Centre consists of the following over 22 acres of land:
- The Total Health Clinic & Pharmacy, which provides medical care to all children and which is also open to the public
- The Morning Star rehabilitation facility, which provides all the basic needs, from shelter to food and clothing. It consists of a dining hall, a library and living quarters for supervisors and missionaries.
- The Guiding Star, which is a building set up with classrooms where teachers follow the national curriculum, so that kids do not fall behind on their education
- Psychological support and counseling, in response to every child’s emotional needs
- An animal farm, two green houses, as well as five acres of land, developed for farming and planting of various crops, for the Centre to be self-sufficient
- A workshop to take care of the Centre’s maintenance and furnishing needs (such as desks, chairs, benches, cupboards, shelves, etc.) Therese Development Centre gives the opportunity to the children to regain their self-esteem and confidence.
