We gathered a group of visionary women to answer a provocative question: How would Nairobi transform if women were its primary architects?

This creative journey led to our publication, Through the Eyes of a Woman, which showcases a bold, alternative blueprint for a city designed by and for women.

Music has always been the heartbeat of Hope Raisers. For years, we’ve been on a mission to ignite the live music scene in Nairobi’s Eastlands through ideas such as Koch Fest, Bega rehersal Studio, Music of the People concert series etc.

Distance hasn’t slowed down our co-founder, Daniel! While now based abroad, he’s back to his first love, the Nyatiti.

During a recent set in Central Stockholm(Stockholm Cultural Week), he even turned the stage into a classroom, inviting local music students to jam along with his band.

But his heart remains in Kenya. Through Collective, Daniel is part of Nyatiti artists mentoring the next generation of players, through organizing Nyatiti playing and making workshops ensuring this beautiful tradition keeps echoing from Nairobi to the world.

For the past few weeks, together with our partners—Loughborough University, the National Museum of Kenya, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, White Loop Limited and Uppsala University, we are exploring how storytelling can be used to build climate‑change literacy among young people in Kenya.

This work also builds on our previous climate‑focused storytelling initiatives, Future Yetu and Story Za Boma.

In our long experience working with art for social change, we have found that while creating and generating art is vital, the most profound transformation occurs when young people actively engage with their communities.

This impact is amplified through the simple yet powerful acts of grassroots organizing, raising awareness, and mentoring the next generation.

We believe every child has the right to play, especially those in marginalized areas.

In Korogocho, we teamed up with Play Without BordersPlay from Sweden to install simple play areas in a public school using local materials.

While these spaces were eventually taken over by new buildings or damaged over time, our project showed that we can create meaningful places for children to play using what is already available in the community.

To champion the arts as a medium for advocacy, we organized Kenya’s first street graffiti festival in Korogocho.

This landmark gathering of leading artists established a new precedent for using urban art to engage communities and drive social change across the country.

Our collaboration with Architecture Without Borders Sweden for many years, facilitated cross-cultural exchange programs between Kenya and Sweden.

This partnership created vital opportunities for young creatives to enhance their skills and gain international perspectives.

The story of placemaking in Nairobi is simply incomplete without the central role of Hope Raisers.

By pioneering a movement rooted in arts and cultural expression alongside our partners etc, we didn’t just change spaces we laid the groundwork and provided the spark for the initiatives that followed.
