Across the health sector, 2025 has brought its share of challenges with shifting priorities, tightening resources, and increasing demands on our frontline systems. Yet in the midst of it all, we at ACHAP have had so much to celebrate; strengthened partnerships, impactful programs across our networks, and a team whose resilience, commitment, unity and grace have carried us through.
Today, we pause to share a Christmas meal and to celebrate the strength, unity, and faith that carried us through. We give thanks for God’s grace, for one another, and for the progress made together across the continent. And with renewed energy, we look ahead to 2026 including our Biennial Conference in Madagascar in February, where we will gather with CHAs and partners to shape the future of faith-based health systems. To support our conference or participate reach us on [email protected]
From the entire ACHAP family, Merry Christmas, and here’s to an even better year ahead!

Across the continent, faith-based health systems have been on the frontlines of HIV care for decades providing hope, dignity, and access in places where disruptions continue to threaten progress.
The HIV response stands at crossroads: services are being interrupted, vulnerabilities are rising, and communities face new barriers. YET WE SEE STRENGTH. We see the determination of health workers, the resilience of communities, and the leadership of faith actors who continue to innovate to ensure that no one is left behind. Today, on World AIDS Day 2025, ACHAP stands with WHO, partners, and communities across Africa under the theme “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response.”

PRESS RELEASE

African Faith and Health Leaders Unite to Drive Locally-Led Action for Stronger Health Systems

Nairobi, Kenya — 27 November 2025

Christian faith and health leaders from 10 African countries issued a joint statement today calling for greater national investment and global solidarity to sustain health services and ensure equitable access to care. (https://www.ccih.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Unity-Statement-2025-African-Faith-Health-Leaders.pdf)

Meeting at the African Faith & Health Leaders Consultation, co-hosted by Christian Connections for International Health - CCIH, All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) and ACHAP Secretariat, participants urged governments and international partners to work hand-in-hand with faith-based health providers that serve millions across Africa.
“Significant reductions in global health funding are prompting us to revisit our roots,” said Doug Fountain, Executive Director of CCIH. “Health is essential to the mission of the Church, and we estimate there are 14,000 Christian health facilities in Africa based on available data, and probably an equivalent number of community-based health programs. National governments and private sources must step up, making this the optimal moment to leverage faith-based assets.”

“Faith leaders have tremendous influence in their communities, especially with respect to personal issues such as health,” said Rev. Dr. Lesmore Gibson Ezekiel, Director of Peace, Ecclesial Leadership, Development, Interfaith and Theology, All Africa Conference of Churches. “They care deeply for the well-being of their congregations and are important advocates for policies that advance and protect health.”

“In the face of funding reductions, we are seeing new partnerships and innovation among Christian health actors,” added Nkatha Njeru Kimathi, CEO of ACHAP. “Now is the time to strengthen collaboration with national and local governments.”

Faith-based networks provide a large share of Africa’s health services, often in remote and underserved communities. The leaders’ statement emphasizes that empowering local systems and sustaining faith-government collaboration are crucial to health in Africa.

This week, ACHAP Secretariat is co-hosting a regional consultation today with Christian Connections for International Health - CCIH and AACC bringing together 60 Christian faith and health leaders from 10 sub-Saharan African countries in Nairobi, Kenya.
With major global health funding cuts affecting communities across Africa, this gathering aims to strengthen locally led solutions and ensure faith-based health providers can continue serving those most in need.
Leaders will reflect on the impact of funding reductions, explore sustainable financing models, strengthen collaboration with governments, and identify joint advocacy priorities.
A joint statement capturing shared commitments will be released at a press briefing on 27 November.
Together, we remain committed to equitable, community-rooted health for all.

Long after the height of the pandemic, the reflections remain clear. When COVID-19 vaccines became available, the challenge was never just supply, it was trust, access, and equity. At the Africa Christian Health Associations Platform (ACHAP), we partnered with IMA and national Christian Health Associations across Africa to bridge this gap through the CoV-FaB project: Promoting COVID-19 Vaccine Equity through Faith-Based Networks.

What worked then still matters now. Communities responded when vaccines came to them in markets, schools, churches, and even sports events. Health workers grew in confidence through mentorship and peer learning, building a stronger frontline for future emergencies. Integration with routine services such as maternal health clinics and HPV campaigns made vaccines part of everyday health care. Collaboration with governments and private sector partners ensured systems were aligned. Most importantly, faith and community leaders stood as trusted champions against fear and misinformation.

These best practices are more than memories of a crisis. They are blueprints for resilience. They remind us that health systems are strongest when they work with the grain of community life, when faith leaders are at the table, and when governments, partners, and local champions move in step.

At ACHAP, we continue to carry forward these lessons into broader health work. The pandemic may have ended, but the call to equity, trust, and community-driven health remains.

This World Breastfeeding Week, we are reflecting on what it truly takes to support a mother.
The 2025 theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems”, is a powerful reminder that breastfeeding doesn't happen in isolation. It flourishes in community.
Read how the ACHAP Afya Project helped build lasting support systems for mothers in Kilifi, Nebbi, and Arua, and how those systems continue to nurture lives today.

In the quiet, rural corners of Kilifi County in Kenya, and across the hills of Nebbi and Arua in Uganda, a quiet happened in conversations between mothers sitting beneath trees, in church halls, and in the recovery wards of hospitals. This was the heart of the ACHAP Afya Project, which ended in 2023
