A sustainable blue economy must work for both people and nature.

Across Africa, millions depend on healthy oceans for food, livelihoods and economic opportunities. Yet small-scale fishers and local ocean enterprises are too often left out of financing and investment systems.

Inclusive and equitable ocean finance is essential to ensure coastal communities can thrive while protecting the marine ecosystems they depend on.

The blue economy sustains millions through fisheries, trade, and marine livelihoods, yet small-scale fishers and local ocean enterprises remain excluded from financing and investment opportunities. As momentum around the blue economy grows, inclusive financing systems are critical to ensuring coastal communities can fully participate in and benefit from ocean-based development.

An investigation led by ODZH has uncovered the suspected deliberate poisoning of vultures in the Mansoa area, where around 50 carcasses were found, with reports of more buried nearby.

Vultures play a vital role in keeping ecosystems healthy by cleaning up carcasses and helping prevent the spread of disease. The illegal killing of these birds is a serious threat to biodiversity and public health.

We commend ODZH and authorities working to investigate this environmental crime and protect these essential species.

Biodiversity is life.

It gives us clean air, fresh water, healthy food, and protects us from climate disasters. Yet across the world, nature is disappearing at an alarming rate.

Nearly one million species are at risk of extinction. But there is still hope.

Across Africa and beyond, communities, young people, scientists, and conservationists are working together to restore forests, protect wetlands, conserve species, and build a future where both people and nature can thrive.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, let’s remember: protecting biodiversity means protecting our future.

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing continues to threaten fish stocks and marine ecosystems across the Western Indian Ocean. Limited surveillance systems, inadequate patrol capacity, and weak enforcement coordination continue to undermine sustainable fisheries management and long-term ocean resilience. Strengthening enforcement systems and regional coordination is critical to protecting fisheries and securing coastal livelihoods.
