“What we went through should not define the next generation. It must end with us.” - This is the commitment by FGM survivors in Tharaka Nithi county. When survivors take such bold resolutions to protect their daughters from this practice, change is sustained at community level. We continue to engage survivors, empowering them to make bold decisions to denounce FGM and protect their daughters and their daughters' daughters from the practice

"I used to think my daughter’s worth was tied to her full compliance to our cultural dictates. Now I know her worth is not dictated by our traditions; it is in giving her a voice, education and protection from harm," - Mzee Elisio.

In the villages of Tharaka Nithi, men like Mzee Elisio are finally saying the quiet part out loud. For years, FGM was never about cruelty or suppressing women and girls; it was about belonging - a mark of pride (social status) to the community. It was about making a girl be a complete Tharaka woman. But that sense of belonging came at a cost that these girls and women have paid in silence.

As the global target of attaining SDG5 target by 2030 gets closer, our interventions are not just about hitting a 2030 deadline; they are about a fundamental change in the minds of the cultural elders, young fathers and boys on masculinity. When men and boys (the traditional gatekeepers of culture) decide that protection means education rather than the cut, the social norm doesn't just bend. It breaks.

We firmly believe that investing in men is not just one of the projects, but rather the engine that propels FGM practicing communities to long term social norms transformation. By 2030, we want FGM and other harmful practices to be stories we tell in the past tense.

In Samburu, a new chapter of youth leadership is unfolding.

Under initiative, trained Y4C Advocates are stepping beyond the sidelines — engaging county stakeholders, county leadership and other key influencers to shape policies and budget priorities that reflect their realities.

And beyond the corners of conference rooms where their influence is being felt, our Y4C champions are already mobilizing communities and amplifying youth voices at community level. Change is no longer tomorrow — it’s happening now.

As we continue with the 16 Days of Activism, we are reminded that men are shaping cultures that either silence women or protect them. This is the moment to choose who we become.

Across our homes, workplaces, communities, and institutions, men hold influence that can shift the trajectory of generations. The conversations we lead, the behaviours we model, the norms we challenge, and the accountability we embrace determine whether violence is normalized or dismantled.

Today, more men are stepping forward, listening, unlearning, taking responsibility and choosing to be allies. But we need more. Because the safety and dignity of women and girls cannot depend on chance; it must be built through intentional action.

This is a call to every father, colleague, leader, friend, and young man:
Use your voice. Challenge harmful practices. Mentor boys differently. Support survivors. Stand up when silence feels easier.

A culture of protection begins with men who are present, aware and courageous enough to lead change.

The future is shaped by the choices we make today. Choose to protect. Choose to stand with women. Choose to end GBV.

The future we envision starts with the voices we uplift today.
As we mark , we unite to amplify children’s ideas, celebrate their leadership, and uphold their rights with intention and action.

Recently, we walked through homesteads in Naisunyai, Samburu and the change is real.
Families are building pit latrines using locally available materials, transforming a myth into a movement.

This is dignity.
This is ownership.
This is community-led change.

Today, we take time to reflect on the capacity of girls to speak up and boldly defend their rights.
How well have we equipped young girls to identify when their rights are being violated?
Some time back, we engaged young girls on their rights, helping them discover the power of their voices.
This holiday, we believe that the knowledge they gained will empower them to boldly defend those rights. 💪🏾
Through the Girl Guard Movement, we are nurturing a generation of girls ready to challenge and break , stand tall for equality, and inspire lasting change in their communities.
Because when girls are informed, they become unstoppable forces for transformation.

In rural Kenya, young people often remain on the periphery of governance and decision-making, yet they make up the largest portion of our population. Engaging youth in governance, policy and budget advocacy is not just about participation; it’s about shaping a future that reflects their realities and aspirations.

When youth in rural areas understand how policies are made, how budgets are allocated, and how they can influence decisions, they become active agents of change, not passive recipients of outcomes. Their voices can highlight the pressing issues often overlooked: access to education, health services, water, job creation, and the inclusion of marginalized groups.

Empowered youth bring fresh ideas, challenge outdated norms, and ensure accountability at the local level. They bridge the gap between leadership and community needs, making governance more responsive, transparent, and equitable.

If we are to achieve sustainable development, we must move beyond tokenism and equip rural youth with the skills and platforms to participate meaningfully in policy and budget processes. Their insights are not just valid; they are vital for a Kenya that works for all.
