Strengthening communities! The Business for Life course addresses poverty among Kenyans who experience high rates of unemployment. Business for Life endeavors to train individuals to become self-supporting and self-sustaining. Facilitators select vetted people to start their own viable businesses within a community. By the end of the course each participant has learned and adopted basic business s

kills and has been involved in a money-making enterprise that they have personally chosen, using the Ksh500 ($7) that each raised and contributed as seed capital. The Business for Life course consists of a business training program targeting the poor and unemployed. Two qualified Facilitators interview and select approximately 20 to 25 individuals to take the course in an area where the participants live. The course lasts for a month where the participants spend alternative days learning business skills and principles in class and then each successive day conducting research and applying what they learned in the marketplace. Each participant conducts the necessary research, writes his/her own business plan, and starts an income generating activity during the course. Participants will attain and apply the necessary skills to run their own business and gain confidence from an informed perspective in starting and running their own business. The Facilitators visits each participant at regular intervals at his/her business over the course of the year following the one-month intensive training. In addition, each participant engages in a financial understanding exercise three months after the completion of the course to further assist with the application and adoption of the skills learned in the initial course.

Confidence isn’t just a feeling; it’s the fuel Yvonne needed. After completing the Business for Life training, she didn’t just gain skills, she found her vision.

She knew exactly what she wanted to do: bring the freshest and flavourful seasonal fruits to the community. But she didn't wait for a fancy shop or a high-rise office. She looked at an old Probox and saw a permanent premise. Now, you’ll find her daily in front of a major supermarket, the vehicle and around it loaded with the fruits.
