Women’s economic empowerment remains detrimental to fostering productive, sustainable, and resilient communities. Through the support of Chalice Canada, ILEG 's community development program provided small business funding to caregivers and parents of sponsored children in the Gomongo and Korogocho slums of Nairobi. Selected beneficiaries received financial support in the form of cheques, enabling them to restock and enhance their small businesses. Additionally, we procured essential machinery and equipment tailored to their business needs, boosting their capacity for success. This initiative underscores ILEG and Chalice's commitment to empowering vulnerable families, addressing gender inequality, and promoting sustainable livelihoods for women in urban informal settlements, thereby paving the way for brighter futures.

Flooding causes widespread destruction to both property and lives. It's crucial to prioritize bolstering the ecological resilience of riparian zones to better cope with and recover from floods. To mitigate the risks of injuries, fatalities, and property damage, as well as preserve the socio-economic fabric of affected areas, ILEG remains dedicated to enhancing riparian zone resilience along rivers, streams and watercourses especially in the counties of Siaya and Kajiado in Kenya. We do this by planting trees like bamboo and reeds, which are native to riparian environments. These plants help slow down surface runoff and improve ground absorption, thus reducing the impact of flooding.

At ILEG, we firmly believe that enhancing the capabilities of local communities and fostering collaboration between communities and various levels of government are essential elements in tackling challenges related to environmental governance.

In alignment with this principle, ILEG, in collaboration with the Danish International Development Agency ( Danida) through Uraia Trust, initiated a project titled "Deepening Democracy: Advancing Participatory Governance of Natural Resources in Kenya."

Throughout the course of this endeavor, we have collaborated closely with local communities and governmental bodies to formulate crucial policies and laws, including but not limited to the Mining Act, Community Land Act, Access to Information Act, Climate Change Act, and Land Amendment Laws. Our endeavors have not only enriched the knowledge base but have also deepened the comprehension of environmental and climate change governance principles within local communities.

In our dedicated pursuit of a sustainable future, we have also heightened awareness regarding land and natural resource rights, underscoring their significant impact on democracy, peace, and security for policymakers and stakeholders alike.

Fostering women's entrepreneurship is a crucial element in realizing the vision of intelligent, sustainable, and inclusive growth, as outlined in our strategy to alleviate poverty in communities. At ILEG, our community development program is passionately dedicated to empowering women. We're excited to share updates about our ongoing project, "Empowering Women Through Skillful Hands: Jitahidi Women Mastering the Art of Cutting and Creating," now in its second phase of training. ILEG established and fortified community organizations like the Kwale County Natural Resources Network (KCNRN) and Kilifi County Natural Resources Network (KICORNET) with the aim of improving Participatory Forest Management (PFM) and addressing key concerns in natural resource governance. These two entities have evolved significantly, not only exerting an impact on local natural resource management matters but also playing a role in shaping national and county policies and legislation.
