🌍THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL INNOVATION — ARE WE BEING AMBITIOUS ENOUGH?

We are living in exceptional times. Across the world, systems are being challenged, and many of the tools and assumptions we once relied on are no longer enough.

But there is hope. Some of the most dynamic and imaginative responses to today’s challenges are emerging from places that have historically been left out of global conversations on social innovation.

That is why Nairobi, Kenya will host SIX Wayfinder Nairobi, bringing together 100 ecosystem builders — practitioners, researchers, funders and policymakers — to explore what comes next for social innovation.

The Institute for Social Transformation (IST), Tangaza University is proud to be an ecosystem partner in this important global conversation.

FROM LEARNING TO COMMUNITY ACTION

Diana, a University Mtaani alumna, is sharing how what she learned at Tangaza University moved beyond the classroom and into real community transformation.

Through dialogue, action research and service learning, students learn to work with communities — identifying problems, analysing their causes, reflecting together and supporting communities to develop their own solutions.

One principle she highlighted was insertion:

“I don’t need to come from far. I am already inserted in the community.”

Diana shared how this approach was applied in an informal settlement in Kayole, where poor sanitation had become normalised.

Through community dialogue, residents were encouraged to look at their sanitation challenges differently, reflect on their impact and take ownership of finding solutions.

And then came the transformation:

“The following days, the community started to dig their own sewage.”

This is the power of University Mtaani — students don't simply learn about community problems. They learn with communities, work alongside them and follow up on solutions.

Mr. Charles Kibue, Sub-County Public Health Officer, Mathare, is highlighting an important dimension of public health: health outcomes are shaped not only by healthcare services, but also by governance and decisions made at the local level.

From sanitation and waste management to the conditions in which people live, devolved governance plays a critical role in shaping healthier communities.

At the University Mtaani Symposium 2026, these conversations are bringing together public health, academia and community realities to ask how we can build healthier, more dignified and sustainable communities.

Fr. Bernard, Director of the Institute for Social Transformation (IST), Tangaza University , welcomed participants to the symposium, setting the tone for a day of dialogue on human dignity, sanitation, public health and community transformation.

The symposium brings together academia, public health practitioners and community voices to explore how universities can contribute to healthier, more dignified and sustainable communities.
