Turning Used Beverage Carton packaging recovery into action takes partnership.
ke CEO was pleased to engage with Tetra Pak International S.A., Ms. Eija Hietavuo, Vice President, Corporate Affairs – Food Systems Transformation and Sustainability, Ms. Katie Carson, Director Corporate Affairs Food and Climate Policy and Ms. Karamuta Kirimi, Head of Corporate Affairs for East and Southern Africa, during a member visit at offices.

Tetra Pak has been a longstanding .ke member and valued supporter of Kenya’s packaging recovery ecosystem, contributing to the advancement of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and supporting efforts to strengthen the collection, recovery and recycling of used beverage cartons.

This engagement reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration to strengthen the ecosystem, unlock greater recovery of valuable materials and accelerate Kenya’s transition towards a more circular economy.

Because recycling starts with what happens after you use it — separate your packaging, keep it clean and make sure it gets collected for recycling.

Why does clean material matter? Because clean, well-separated packaging is easier to sort, has greater value and can be processed into new products instead of being lost as waste.

At PAKPRO Kenya, we believe a truly circular economy is built through collaboration: bringing together communities, waste service providers, government, Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs), and industry to create systems that work for everyone.

In Pipeline, the opportunity is clear. By strengthening the capacity of waste actors, advancing segregation at source, creating stronger markets for recyclables, embedding occupational safety, and connecting informal and community-based actors to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), we can move from managing waste to unlocking value from it.

The future of waste management must be inclusive, safe, commercially viable, and circular.

That means creating pathways for CBOs and waste service providers to become stronger participants in the recycling value chain not just as collectors, but as entrepreneurs, service providers, and critical partners in Kenya’s circular economy.

Providing PPEs to waste actors is one practical step toward safer working conditions. But lasting transformation requires more: stronger systems, better market linkages, investment in capacity, and sustained collaboration.

Recycler EPR Fees Validation Workshop

Today, PAKPRO convened a robust engagement with recycler representatives from T3 Africa PRO-Green, , Ecopost, Ramani Warehouse Limited, Retec Fibre, sunriseimpexltd, to listen-not just to discuss EPR, but to understand what it takes to make the system work on the ground.

We heard firsthand about the costs, risks and operational realities of recycling, and the importance of a financial model that is transparent, equitable and practical.

As PAKPRO we recognize that recyclers are a critical link in the EPR system. They are a critical cog in the economics of viability and sustainability in the waste commodities sector. As value creators, from collected materials into usable resources they provide the final recovery outcomes that ultimately close the circular loop.

As we test and refine the proposed model, their experience and input will help shape a system that recognizes every link in the value chain and directs support where it can have the greatest impact. Because a fairer EPR system cannot be designed for the value chain without being shaped by the value chain.

Celebrating Enterprise, Innovation and the People Building Kenya’s Circular Economy

Glass is a valuable packaging material with the potential to be recovered, recycled and returned to productive use again and again. Yet, its role in Kenya’s circular economy is often underappreciated.

That is why the recognition of Louisa Gathecha among the Top 10 Africa's Business Heroes is particularly meaningful at this moment. As Founder and CEO of , Louisa has built a business around recovering glass and demonstrating that what is often viewed as waste can instead be a valuable economic resource.

Her journey is an important reminder that recycling is not only an environmental responsibility—it is an economic opportunity. It creates livelihoods, supports businesses across the value chain and contributes to the infrastructure needed to build a stronger circular economy.

The recognition also comes at an important time for Kenya as the country advances the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The conversation is increasingly moving beyond waste management towards building effective systems that recover materials, create economic value and keep resources in circulation.

Value Chain Engagement

During a courtesy visit by over 21 CBO representatives drawn from across Nairobi County, PAKPRO engaged waste recovery actors on the Biz na Taka programme designed to create greater transparency, accountability and efficiency across the value chain.

Our discussions focused on strengthening partnerships between PAKPRO and grassroots community-based organizations, through capacity building, technical support and institutional strengthening for waste entrepreneurs.

We also spoke about leveraging Biz na Taka in improving market access and building sustainable value chains for recyclable materials, and on EPR and other policy frameworks affecting community waste enterprises.

In addition, we explored practical models for the long-term sustainability of community-led recycling initiatives, and opportunities for investment, innovation and inclusive growth within Kenya’s circular economy.

We believe that Biz na Taka can unlock the potential within grassroots waste enterprises through stronger collaboration will not only improve environmental outcomes, but also create dignified livelihoods, that contributes significantly to Kenya’s sustainable development agenda.

Recycler Learning Exchange

During a recent Recycler Learning Visit in Johannesburg, South Africa, sponsored by Tetra Pak , PAKPRO together with Sustainable Solutions visited Timber Plastics and Infinite Industries South Africa to explore scale in conversion of recycled packaging from everyday durable, functional products like outdoor furniture to innovative long term solutions.

These examples reinforce an important lesson for Kenya: the future of packaging recovery lies in building stronger links between collection, recycling, manufacturing and markets for recycled materials. PAKPRO is focused on supporting partners in benchmarking by looking beyond borders to identify practical innovations, strengthen local recovery systems and demonstrate the economic potential of circularity.

When recovered packaging becomes a product with purpose, recycling moves from an environmental obligation to an engine for innovation, enterprise and value creation. The question is no longer “Can this packaging be recovered?” It is “What value can we create from it next?”

Material Spotlight: PET Bottles .

PET (resin code 1) is Kenya's most successfully recovered packaging material, clear bottles are baled, flaked, washed and reprocessed into rPET and polyester fibre locally. Keep bottles empty, dry and free of residue to protect bale value; contamination is the main reason loads are downgraded. Through EPR, PAKPRO funds the collection and sorting capacity that keeps PET circulating.​
