Voices of the Ocean Episode 1: Bridging the Gap in Conservation

Abubakar Twalib (Chairman, Lamu Beach Management) shares how the East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) is empowering the coastal community of Lamu to take their seat at the table for the upcoming Our Ocean Conference (OOC11).

For too long, major environmental decisions have been made without the input of grassroots communities. Through education and outreach, the EAWLS is ensuring that the people of Lamu, from elders to the youth, know how to write proposals, submit applications, and make their voices heard.

As the Our Ocean Conference (OOC11) makes its African debut, it presents a critical opportunity to amplify Civil Society Organization (CSO) voices, which are often underrepresented in global marine conservation discussions. Through this campaign, The Consortium for the Conservation of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO-C) seeks to spotlight key priorities in marine conservation and ocean governance, engage policymakers, and shape decisions at the Our Ocean Conference 2026.

This Friday, January 31, 2025, we’re walking to raise awareness for Lake Ol Bolossat, Kenya’s only freshwater lake in Central Kenya, as we gear up for World Wetlands Day.

Lake Ol Bolossat is a vital source of water for local communities, wildlife, and livestock. It’s also an Important Bird Area, attracting tourists and researchers from around the world. But the lake is facing serious threats from pollution, encroachment, and unsustainable development.

Join us in raising awareness for its conservation and advocating for its designation as Kenya's 7th Ramsar Site - an important step in protecting biodiversity, water security, and climate resilience.
