ACORN Kenya – Beat the Heat Campaign 2026 🌍

ACORN Kenya proudly joined the global Beat the Heat Campaign, bringing community members together for a powerful discussion on climate change, global warming, and climate justice.

The dialogue highlighted the growing impact of rising temperatures, floods, droughts, and environmental degradation on vulnerable communities. Participants emphasized that climate change is not a distant threat—it is a reality affecting our daily lives, livelihoods, and future.

Together, we called for collective action to protect our environment through tree planting, proper waste management, clean energy, and stronger community-led climate solutions. We also reaffirmed that climate justice has no borders, and every individual has a role to play in building resilient and sustainable communities.

From Nairobi to the world, the time to act is now. Together, we can beat the heat and protect our planet for future generations.

Today marked an important step forward as ACORN Kenya successfully convened a stakeholders' meeting with landlords to address the persistent sewerage challenges affecting our community.

The meeting brought together all the key stakeholders, including representatives from the Assistant County Commissioner's office, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, the Office of the MCA, the Area Chief, County Ward Administrators, landlords, and community leaders. Their presence demonstrated a shared commitment to finding practical and lasting solutions.

Through open dialogue, participants discussed the causes of the recurring sewer blockages, the responsibilities of each stakeholder, and agreed on the need for coordinated action to restore a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all residents.
Together we organize. Together we solve. Together we win.

For a long time, residents of Majengo and Githembe have faced serious challenges caused by poor sewerage systems, including overflowing sewage, blocked drainage channels, unpleasant odors, health risks, and environmental pollution. These challenges have negatively affected the well-being and dignity of families living in these communities.

In response to these concerns, ACORN Kenya has been working alongside residents to advocate for lasting solutions and improved sanitation services in the area.

We therefore invite all landlords and property owners from Majengo and Githembe to attend a Stakeholders' Meeting on 30th June 2026 to discuss the sewerage situation and agree on practical solutions.

The meeting will bring together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC), the Area Chief, the Assistant County Commissioner (ACC), and the Member of County Assembly (MCA).

Your participation is important as we work together to improve sanitation, public health, and living conditions for all residents of Majengo and Githembe.

These two photos tell a powerful story of community organizing, advocacy, and change led by ACORN Kenya in Kariobangi Majengo.

Before Intervention – Community Clean-up and Advocacy

The first photo shows the condition of the area before intervention. Residents had to live with poor drainage, open wastewater channels, muddy pathways, and an unhealthy environment that exposed families, especially children, to disease and safety risks. Through community clean-up activities, ACORN Kenya mobilized residents to take action while also petitioning government authorities for improved roads and proper drainage infrastructure.

After Intervention – A Visible Transformation

The second photo demonstrates the remarkable transformation achieved through collective action and persistent advocacy. Following ACORN Kenya's engagement with residents and authorities, a modern paved road and improved drainage system were constructed. The new infrastructure has enhanced accessibility, reduced flooding, improved sanitation, and created a safer and more dignified environment for the people of Kariobangi Majengo.

Impact Statement

"This transformation is a testament to the power of organized communities. What was once a muddy and poorly drained pathway has become a clean, accessible, and safer road serving hundreds of residents every day. Through community organizing, clean-up campaigns, and sustained advocacy, ACORN Kenya helped amplify residents' voices, leading to the construction of proper roads and drainage systems that have improved public health, mobility, and the overall quality of life in Kariobangi Majengo. This achievement demonstrates that when communities come together and demand change, lasting development becomes possible."

ACORN Kenya Youth Leadership and Governance Training – Kariobangi

ACORN Kenya brought together young people from Kariobangi for a leadership and governance training aimed at building a new generation of grassroots leaders. Through interactive discussions and learning sessions, the youth were equipped with knowledge on community organizing, leadership skills, civic engagement, and advocacy.

The training created a safe space for young people to share ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen their capacity to address challenges affecting their communities. By investing in youth leadership, ACORN Kenya is empowering young people to become agents of change who can mobilize their communities, advocate for their rights, and champion accountability in local governance.

"Strong communities are built by informed and organized citizens. By nurturing youth leadership today, we are shaping the grassroots leaders of tomorrow." ACORN HuddersfieldACORN HackneyACORN SouthendACORN BradfordWade RathkeCraig Robbins
