PROCMURA - Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa

Young people from the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church- KELC gathered in Kilifi for the 2026 National Youth Rally, bringing together diverse experiences, cultures and perspectives for a week of worship, learning, fellowship and reflection.

Held under the theme “Rooted in Christ, Growing to Transform the World”, inspired by Colossians 2:6–7, the rally featured interactive learning sessions, football and volleyball, beach games, a beach clean-up, cultural presentations and the Mr. and Miss KELC 2026 competition.

PROCMURA was among the partners and friends who supported the rally, including the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC). The PROCMURA team facilitated sessions on responsible and active citizenship and emerging trends in technology. The sessions gave young people space to reflect on their responsibilities in the Church and wider society, while exploring how to navigate and make responsible use of a rapidly changing digital and technological landscape.

The learning was complemented by activities that brought young people together in different ways. The beach clean-up offered an opportunity to serve the local community, while the games created room for teamwork and friendly competition. During the Cultural Night, young people from different parts of Kenya shared their traditions through music, dance, dress and other cultural expressions.

The rally, graced by KELC Bishop Catherine Ngina and other church leaders, also welcomed friends from beyond Kenya, including a delegation from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT).

For PROCMURA, spaces such as these are very important. They give young people safe spaces and opportunities to learn from one another, appreciate diversity, understand their responsibilities as a significant demographic in society and develop the confidence to contribute positively to their churches and communities.

Congratulations to the KELC National Youth Committee for bringing together such a vibrant and meaningful gathering of young people, and thank you to all the partners, leaders, and friends whose support helped make the 2026 rally a success.

Young people may come from different communities, faiths, and circumstances, but many share the same hopes for their future. They want opportunities to learn, earn a living, develop their potential, and contribute meaningfully to society.

As the world marks International Youth Day 2026 under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” we celebrate the young people across Africa who continue to pursue these aspirations, often despite limited opportunities.

Through our Youth and Interreligious Cooperation Program, PROCMURA is investing in practical skills development through our Youth Empowerment Centres. Young people gain skills that can improve their prospects for employment, entrepreneurship, and further learning, while receiving continued mentorship beyond the training.

The initiative also provides safe spaces for young people from different religious backgrounds to interact, learn together, and strengthen interreligious cooperation. This is the Africa we want young people to build. An Africa where different religious backgrounds do not stand in the way of common aspirations, and where young people have the skills, opportunities and relationships to build peaceful, cohesive and inclusive communities.

Twenty-eight years ago, the August 7, 1998, terrorist attack in Nairobi left a painful mark on Kenya and the wider region. The coordinated attacks on the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam claimed more than 200 lives and injured thousands, with Nairobi bearing the greatest loss.

As we remember those who lost their lives, the survivors and families whose lives were forever changed, the anniversary is also a reminder that violent extremism remains a threat to the peace and security of our communities.

At PROCMURA, we believe that building lasting peace requires more than responding to violence after it occurs. It calls for sustained efforts to address intolerance, radicalisation and the divisions that extremists exploit, while strengthening relationships, dialogue and cooperation among people of different religious and social backgrounds. For decades, PROCMURA has worked with religious leaders, young people, women and communities across Africa to strengthen interreligious cooperation, build resilience against radicalisation and violent extremism, and promote peaceful coexistence within communities.

Twenty-eight years on, may the memory of August 7, 1998, strengthen our collective resolve to build an African continent where people live together peacefully, communities remain cohesive and inclusive, and differences are never used to justify violence.

The PROCMURA community of Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) trainers across Africa continues to grow.

In Zanzibar, PROCMURA successfully concluded training for a new group of FoRB trainers, strengthening the network of people equipped to promote greater understanding and respect for religious freedom within their communities across Africa.

In a continent as religiously diverse as Africa, protecting the right of every person to practise and express their faith or belief without discrimination or coercion is essential to how we live together.
Through these training sessions, PROCMURA continues to equip stakeholders, including religious communities and leaders, women, youth, government representatives and the media, to take this understanding beyond the training room and into their communities, helping to address FoRB-related violations, religious intolerance, challenge misconceptions and strengthen relationships across religious differences.

Our goal is to see religious freedom respected for all across our beautiful continent of Africa, in the spirit of building cohesive and inclusive societies where people of different faiths and beliefs can live together peacefully and contribute to sustainable development.

Religious freedom is a fundamental right to which everyone is entitled, regardless of their faith, background, or beliefs. Across Cameroon, Nigeria, and Kenya, we're working with our FoRB Coordinators in a media campaign tailored to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and promoting religious freedom for all.

Through radio programmes, television discussions, community conversations, and other media platforms, the campaign is creating spaces for learning, dialogue, and reflection on the rights of individuals and communities to practise, manifest, or change their religion or belief without fear, discrimination, or coercion.

At a time when misinformation, prejudice, and religious intolerance continue to affect many societies, informed public engagement remains essential to building communities that uphold human dignity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.

Through this initiative, PROCMURA continues to work with all stakeholders, including religious leaders, media practitioners, and local communities, to strengthen the understanding of Freedom of Religion or Belief as a shared responsibility benefiting all and a basic human right.

PROCMURA was honoured to join St. Paul's University, Limuru, as a sponsor and participant in the inaugural Elimu Bora Run, an initiative dedicated to supporting financially vulnerable students.

Led by our Team Leader, Ms. Joy Wandabwa, members of the PROCMURA team proudly took part in the 5km, 10km, and 15km race categories alongside students, partners, sponsors, staff, and friends of the university who gathered in support of this noble cause.

The event, officially flagged off by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Esther Mombo, reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to quality education and creating opportunities for young people whose academic aspirations are at risk due to financial challenges.

The partnership between PROCMURA and St. Paul's University spans many years and includes collaboration in training students pursuing the Master's Programme in Islam and Christian–Muslim Relations (ICMR).

At PROCMURA, we recognise that education plays a critical role in shaping informed, resilient, and peaceful communities. We are therefore proud to stand with institutions and initiatives that invest in the potential of future generations.

For more than six decades, PROCMURA has worked alongside various stakeholders, including churches, religious leaders, women, youth, and communities across Africa, to promote constructive Christian–Muslim relations, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development.

Yesterday, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, we reached an important milestone in that journey as we officially broke ground for our Berkeley Residency Apartments on our Rhapta Road property in Westlands, Nairobi.

The project forms part of PROCMURA's long-term financial sustainability strategy aimed at strengthening the organisation's capacity to continue serving communities across Africa. Once completed, the development is expected to contribute greatly to PROCMURA’s mission across the continent.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together religious leaders who dedicated the project, partners, friends, and supporters who have walked with PROCMURA throughout this journey, as we gave thanks to God for bringing the vision to life.
What was once an idea on paper has actualised, and we give God all the glory!

We successfully concluded our three-day stakeholders' workshop, which brought together church leaders, theologians, scholars, and practitioners to reflect on a wide range of issues in Christian-Muslim relations in Africa that continue to shape Christian witness in today's religiously pluralistic landscape.

The workshop created space and a platform for deeper engagement on historical and theological foundations of Christian–Muslim relations, emerging trends in Africa, interreligious studies within Christian mission, peacebuilding, and practical strategies to strengthen peaceful coexistence among communities of different faiths across the continent.

At a time when many societies continue to grapple with religious tension, extremism, misinformation, and growing social fragmentation, the workshop reaffirmed the importance of informed leadership, especially within the church and theological institutions, constructive engagement, and sustained investment in building relationships rooted in mutual respect and understanding.

For more than 65 years, PROCMURA has remained committed to equipping churches, faith leaders, and communities across Africa with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate interreligious realities responsibly while promoting peace, good neighbourliness, and inclusive societies.
