Case Update | Joyce Syombua & Her Two Children (2020)
Femicide Count-Kenya documented the murder of Joyce Syombua and her two children in 2020. Nearly five years later, the case has reached sentencing.
On 14 July 2026, the High Court sentenced former Kenya Defence Forces Major Peter Mugure Mwaura to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of murdering his wife, Joyce Syombua, and their two children. In delivering the sentence, the court described the killings as exceptionally brutal and noted that the convict had shown no remorse. Justice Martin Muya ruled that the gravity of the offence warranted a life sentence.
Joyce and her children disappeared in January 2020. Their bodies were later recovered from a septic tank at the family's home in Lanet, Nakuru County. Investigations established that they had been murdered before their bodies were concealed.
This sentence marks an important milestone in the family's pursuit of justice and underscores the importance of sustained documentation and follow-up of femicide cases. It also serves as a reminder that while justice may eventually be delivered, families often endure years of investigations and court proceedings before cases are concluded.
