And just like that, four days of dialogue, evidence, learning and collaboration come to a close in Nairobi.

The final day brought Permanent Secretaries together for “Coordinated Action for Advancing a Regional Education Agenda,” followed by “Closing the Foundational Learning Gap,” where the Government of Kenya (EMASTEA) shared findings from the Teacher Needs Assessment for the Numeracy for Life Project in Early Years .

Across four days, we’ve seen that while we share the challenges, we can also share the solutions. Proud to have been part of this regional conversation alongside our members, peers and partners.

The work continues. See you in Uganda for the next EAC Regional Conference!

Day 3 of EAC Education Conference was packed with powerful conversations on evidence, equity, community engagement and systems change.

Our members and peers continued to shape the conversation across the conference:

Uwezo Uganda opened space for peers to share experiences and initiatives on Strengthening Early and Foundational Learning through Community Engagement, with CEO Mary Goretti chairing and John Mugo of Z**i Afrique Foundation as discussant.

Mary Goretti also led reflections on the 2026 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, bringing government officials and partners into the conversation on what the evidence means for education policy.

RELI led a Fireside Chat on Sustaining Gender Equality in Education, followed by a conversation on Building Powerful Education Networks for Systems Change in Africa.

The day closed with Mizizi Elimu Afrika, with Dr. John Mugo chairing a critical session on Evidence, Equity and System Reform for Foundational Learning.

From community voices to policymakers, networks and practitioners, our members and peers are helping move the conversation from evidence to action.

Another rich day at the 2nd EAC Education Conference, with government, civil society, development partners and education practitioners coming together around one big question: How do we turn our commitments into better learning outcomes for every child?

We had an engaging session on “Delivering on the Promise of Foundational Learning: What Does It Take?”, convened by our member Z**i Afrique Foundation with leading the presentation. The regional panel brought together voices from Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Somalia, creating space to openly share challenges, solutions and lessons from across the region.

We then turned to the power of evidence through “Making Learning Visible: Strengthening Foundational Learning through Citizen-Led Assessment Evidence in East and Southern Africa.”

The session, presented by Faridah Nassereka - Uwezo Uganda, with co-authors Carol Onsomu and Boaz Ochi Agenda, Daud Siwalaze - Uwezo Tanzania, and Amélia Usenne - Facilidade Mozambique, reminded us of the value of citizen-led evidence in understanding what are actually learning and where action is needed.

Dr Mary Goretti from challenged stakeholders to embrace accountability, build resilient systems and strengthen genuine partnerships to turn commitments into measurable learning outcomes.

A strong start to the 2nd EAC Regional Conference on Education! 🌍

Our member Mizizi Elimu Afrika opened with a session on making competency-based learning more meaningful in the classroom.

Later, PAL Network presented the ICAN–ICAR Initiative, highlighting the importance of stronger foundational learning data across East Africa.

PAL Network launched the 2026 ICAN–ICAR Regional Report at , bringing together findings from Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda.

The report draws on:

👥 1,700+ citizen volunteers
🏠 21,000+ households
📍 1,071 enumeration areas

The findings underscore the urgency: only about 1 in 5 10-year-olds reached minimum proficiency in both reading and mathematics.

Now the priority is to turn that evidence into policy, investment and action.
